It seems that with the synthetic corks, someone would have incorporated a nylon loop into the top of the cork so that it could be extracted with stout-handled Wooden spoon or other object.

       The only reason to have corks at all is to permit the dog and pony show of opening the bottle.   

       Just put a screw cap on it.
