itemized bank statement

understand the pattern, improve the spend

bank statement for usage of debit/credit card provides information on where and when the money was spent.

One more level of detail will be of great help for insights on the spend.

ex: we would have brought 100 items from walmart over a period of 1 month, not in a single transaction but say over 8 transactions and for total value of $1250. Bank statement will only tell us the dates and monetary value for each of the 8 transactions.

What I am interested in is spend pattern of those 100 items. % of spend on beer, % of spend on milk, meat etc...possibility for endless analytics...over a year, understand the ratio of spend on travel, food, insurance and all other things (with itemized details) we buy without using an expense tracking app in phone

such a technology requires banks to tie-up with business establishments, but ultimately the consumers will gain great depths on their spend.

this is similar to itemized statement of phone calls which made me realize the potential to reduce the spend on phone calls based on learning from historic spend

Loyalty cards already provide retailers with these data, but they keep it to themselves (apart from when they sell it on).

All you have to do is persuade them to give you a monthly statement in digital format.

       It's the preinstalled degerundiser extension

But there are, I have been told by young people of my acquaintance, debit card providers who carry out this service. And any number of apps and suchlike that layer this service across the top of your varied banking and financial accounts.

Perhaps one day I'll borrow a friends loyalty card and buy these items on separate days:

       Alarm clock
Wire
Weed killer
Sugar
Etc.
Ling, Aug 22 2017

A better shopping list would be:

       Mobile phone
9V batteries
Perchlorate-based lavatory cleaner
Tins of shoe polish
3V flashlight lamps
Strike-anywhere matches
Icing sugar
Formula baby milk
Pressure cooker
Assorted nuts and bolts
Contact adhesive
Insulating tape
Mousetraps (wooden)
Drawing pins

When making your purchases, wear generic clothing in muted colours, including a hoodie, and pay cash in used small denomination bills. Use public transport, involving several changes of route. Do not carry an active mobile phone or any contactless bank cards.

//Guaranteed to cause sleepleess nights for law enforcement// But since they won't know you've bought all those things, perhaps not.

Hence the use of someone else's loyalty card.

For best results, make sure that there's no record of any purchases of alcohol or pork products associated with the card - the snoopers watch for that sort of signature.

I am puzzled by the presence of mousetraps on the list. Unless deployed in very, very large numbers they are unlikely, surely, to cause more than a minor nuisance even if they survive the blast without being sprung.

Or perhaps it's best if I don't know.
MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 22 2017

We could tell you, but then we'd have to kill ... oh, no, it's OK, don't worry, apparently we can tell you and we don't have to kill you, but then we'd have to glue a teaspoon to the back of your left ear with cyanoacrillate adhesive, and write offensive anglo-saxon words on the outside of your bathroom window with grape-flavoured lip salve.

       Is that all right ?

I suspect that the mousetraps are for the sexual gratification part of the process.
Ling, Aug 22 2017

OK, I'm curious about the baby formula. The sugar, OK, is a fuel which could burn - perhaps rapidly - but what does the baby formula do for you? Have you discovered a particularly fiendish use for linoleic acid?

Oh, and could you do matching spoons for both ears?
pertinax, Aug 23 2017

// what does the baby formula do for you? Have you discovered a particularly fiendish use for linoleic acid? //

You don't need to know that.

// Oh, and could you do matching spoons for both ears? //

You'll have to supply the matching spoons, but yes.

// the mousetraps are for the sexual gratification //

No, the mousetraps are for the anti-handling circuit; a useful countermeasure to the attempted deployment of a hydrostatic disruptor (if you know how to use them).

       Isn't this what Mint does?

*leaves to look up what a hydrostatic disruptor is*

       *returns*

As I thought when I first read the term (because how does static pressure disrupt anything?), it appears to not be a thing.
