A steering wheel cooler, now theres a thought...the number of times I've had to get into my stinking hot car and steer with my fingertips until the A/C cools the steering wheel down.

Very low tech I know, but why not wear gloves ?

Perhaps it is one of the benefits of living in a maritime climate, or perhaps I am lucky to have had wheels and knobs made of some kind of dark rubbery material, but I have never, ever found my wheel or knob to be that cold, even on the coldest days of the years.

Or perhaps I have rough hands.

Having said all that, It is an experience I shall seek out in future.

What, you personally have WHEELS ? Most of the other HalfBakers are bipedal (allegedly). As to the other thing, I think that's a level of information beyond that which is required.

When the temperature is in the single digits, wearing gloves and running the heater aren't enough. My '91 Honda Civic's vinyl steering wheel stays cold for a half hour or more. Makes me want to drive hands-free (dangerous, I know). I've seen heated steering wheels on new cars, but when will they sell a retro-fit heated steering wheel cover?

I think people who buy cars with heated steering wheels tend to by automatic transmission too...

Audi & BMW has heated steering wheels- I agree with cooled steering wheels- much bigger problem in the summer for black leather wrapped!

For cold steering wheels: gloves. There is a little storage compartment built in the dashboard of most cars called a "glovebox."

For hot steering wheels, how about a gel-filled steering wheel cover that one keeps in the refrigerator until needed?

I suppose something similar could be made to be heated in a microwave oven for cold steering wheels.
