terrorists can change their appearance, but it is very difficult to change your gait (the way in which you walk). Whenever the police catch criminals, they could record the way they walk and put it into a database. At airports and other sensitive places, there could be cameras linked to movement-recognition
software. They way people walk can be highly individual and recognizable. You can often recognize a person by the way they walk a long time before they are near enough to recognize their face. On the contra-side: yes, this would bring us one step closer to the big-brother society.
Search for "Gait Recognition"

You might also be able to get a computer to recognize when someone's walking like they've got a kilo of heroin up their arse. |

This has possibilites, although shoes can make a big difference. |

"this would bring us one step closer to the big-brother society". One step further in, more like .... was that an intentional pun ? |

Will this technology be administered by the Ministry of Silly Walks? |

<falsetto>You can tell by the way I use my walk I'm a ladies man, no time to talk!</falsetto> |

I can imagine someone thinking that "terrorists" walk like the villians in Scooby Doo and therefore will be easy to detect ... |
|

.... and they would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those pesky kids !! |

Just a practical question, how will any sensor get a clear picture in a typical scenario such as a busy airport terminal? |
|
|
If you, say, tripped and fell over, could there be "faller ID?" |
|
|
you can't change your fingerprints, and it's hard to change your appearance, but as far as gaits go, you can just have someone kick you in the balls before you go into the terminal... |

This sort of thing is an actual research topic. Some "gait recognition" type systems work by figuring out the lengths of the various long bones (or, more accurately I guess, the distances between the centers of rotation of different joints) based on the way limbs move as seen by a video camera. Spoofing these would be pretty difficult I'd think. |

(This info is dimly remembered from some research I did on a related topic 5-6 years ago; the state of the art has presumably moved forward since then.) |

Suppose that you were to have podiatric surgery, or orthopaedic surgery, etc etc etc. Would you then have to have your gait re-analyzed, or would you still be detectible? Who would be responsible for analyzing the gaits of the people in the first place? |

A turnkey package can be put together. The hardware can be sold under the Gaitway brand and the software . . . well, it makes sense that it come from a company founded by Bill Gaits, no? |
|
|
what?? its really easy to change your gait. just ask som1 to kick you in the balls and then you can get past all these things. |

Cory Doctorow's novel Little Brother (2008) includes gait
recognition cameras. The characters put gravel in their
shoes to defeat them. |
