Skis with fur on the bottom | |
What would be the benefit or disadvantage of incorporating a
fur-like surface treatment to ski bottoms. I was just thinking
about the way it is easier to slide things across a surface
when there is less contiguous surface contact.

Good heavens, this has been baked for hundreds of years, though I assume the great minds dictum. Initially, seal fur was preferred. Now, it's mohair plush with gooey stuff on the back and hooks for the ends of the skis. It works phenomenally well, and in steep terrain slows you down (downhill) to a manageable speed. Uphill, you can go straight up a forty-five degree slope. They're called skins in ski stores. |
