The eternal struggle between an easy take off long surfboard and a short manouverable short board could be accomodated with a hybrid longboard with explosively jettisoned tail section of 2-3 feet in length. Nasa technology could be borrowed that separates stages of rockets and icbms. Once sufer is standing up he remotely triggers separation. Note: An additional set of fins will bee required on existing section of board, possibly spring loaded to extend on command.

I do NOT want to by lying down on this thing when the explosive bolts at the tail are accidentally activated.

Exploding Tail Surfboards are to Great White Sharks, as Tail Dropping Skinks are to Small Birds.

why explosive, couldn't it just have a quick release mechanism ? (with a gps/turbine kit to automatically get it to head for shore once you've jettisoned it).
