Internal combustion Steam engines | |
I am very sorry , but I think the water you all want may be water/methonol, a different animal. I am sure the manufactures are doing all they can to make the old infernal consuption engine as efficient as they can, but the thing that it does best is put heat up the exhust. why not harness this heat and
put it through an exhust gas boiler and drive a steam engine which could power the altrenator, oil pump, water pump, steering pump, even the aircoditioning compressor. Tacking this load off the engine would probably relive it of about 10hp, and thus reduce your fuel consumption.

Don't be sorry.....I'm a water / ethanol fan myself. |

What's going to power those units while the engine comes up to operating temp ? |

For stationary systems there are actually such combinations. Microturbines with absorber cooling units on the exhaust are popular. (link) |

The actual horsepower you would free up is closer to fourty or fifty: 10 for the alternator 15-20 for the ac compressor and 5 each for the water pump, power steering, and smog air pump(on some cars). However the complexity of an additional system (and the weight and size penalty) offset the actual efficiency of the total system (ie.it isnt worth the cost and additional mantenance the system would require) |

40-50 hp?? Here in the US, we must measure horsepower differently, I drove a car once that made 42 hp, it was not the sportiest, but i did not have to hand crank the engine to make the ac work, it actually moved down the road. |
