Our car has automatic windows, I just thought this would be a useful idea for the home. Either by button or remote control. The gap they slide down into could be fitted with a cleaning mechanism, saving time and money on window cleaners.

For more years than you have been alive, the rubber strips into which car windows slide have been used for cleaning them.

Do I understand this idea correctly? You are suggesting that you have windows for homes that slide up and down, mechanically, into pockets in the wall? I don't see why this couldn't be done and, further, why they couldn't be fitted with squeegee elements to wipe the glass as it moved down. The only thing that seems a potential problem (other than the "Who would want these?" problem) is that, typically, the wall height beneath a window is much shorter an area than the window pane is tall. I suppose that the retract pocket could be deeper then the floor, though. Alternatively, the window panes could retract laterally instead of vertically.

[RT]: Your friend went ballistic if someone rolled down a window in his car, or if they squeegeed his windows?

I would like remote control windows, to get to mine I have to climb over all sorts of obstacles, desks, chairs, beds, clothing, etc.... Press a button and down they come would be great. With the added advantage of the cleaning mechanism, as I sacked the window cleaner a few years ago. Cleaning 'o-natural' for mine I'm afraid.

I think the only reason these are not available is that home windows are much larger then car windows. the motors would be large or the windows would have to be smaller.

it could be done with multiple panes on several rails like sliding glass doors. the more I think about it the more I think it is possible.

don't forget the safety concern with children.
