Get something like a kindle, and insert transparent solar cells on top of the screen.

This means, when reading in the sun, the battery is being charged (hopefully, depending on the solar cell's efficiency)

Will help a lot in extending reading time.

The whole point of eink is that it uses almost no power, so battery life is not an issue. Leave the wireless off, and the kindle battery lasts a month.

but nevertheless its useful not having to connect your charger ever.

Which can be useful in perhaps, the next zombie Apocalypse

Half of the point of e-ink is to not make your eyes go bonkers from reading a screen for hours. Transparent cells would defeat that.
