i am sorry if this has been said before but I do not think it has, it would be good to have some kind of aerosol liquid which could be sprayed on the ears and, hardening, make them very strong. I think kevlar might work or some other futuristic bulletproof plastic. then large, heavy objects could be carried on strings from the ears, and also people could be suspended painlessly from their ears leaving the hands free

Um, why? Even if the ears could support the weight, I imagine the skin on the skull would simply rip away and you'd be back as square one.

You could just rub epoxy resin on your head, it sets pretty hard. The only danger would be that as it sets you could touch something else and you'd be stuck to it.... like if you scratched your head, or a low flying condor swooped down.

"also people could be suspended painlessly from their ears leaving the hands free"

I have a vision of some ghastly call-centre-from-hell setup with hundreds of operators suspended on different levels in front of screens, with both hands free to type and take notes......

My overwhelming impression after a brief experiment with some thick wire and a coffee mug full of bolts is that nature does not intend the human pinna to serve as a load bearing structure, either in tension or compression, no matter how much adhesive or padding one uses. But if someone is prepared to demonstrate the "painlessly from their ears" hanging thing I will pay a pound to come and watch.

DrVindaloo, I think your link was actually a recent success story for the elfclips idea.

My ears have .5" holes in the lobes and I use these (along with two tiny, truncated lengths metal tubing to line the soft skin inside the holes) as an "extra hand" to hold small tools all the time. Paintbrushes, screwdrivers, etc. hang quite nicely there temporarily if inserted front-to-back. I also clip my keys there when I'm staggering from my vehicle to my apartment door with a big armload of groceries. As [calum] noted, it did "hurt like buggery" at first, but my ears toughened over time and now it's no problem whatsoever.

Jester: Sounds like a job for Surrealist Squad ..... if I wake up screaming in the night, you're to blame.

i have no idea how functional it would be, but having freaky super strong kevlar ears has got to be a hit at the star trek and roll play conventions... thats how i feel about it.
