Insects are vulnerable to heat. Though some roaches can jog
along when coated in insect spray, they will not tolerate a
gentle roast.
A handheld device that emits a focusable beam of heat
(infrared?). Should get rid of just about any uninvited
creepies and make you feel like a giant starship
trooper. No
poison, intuitive and effective. With a wider focus available
for swarms.

Welcome to the Halfbakery. The drinks service will begin shortly, and medication is available on request. |

If the zapper is emitting only IR, how will you know you're aiming it right? You'll want a visible laser pointer as well, I reckon. |

If it's not coherent radiation, inverse-square law is a problem. To deliver an effective dose in a short time over a few metres range, the device is going to have to emit hundreds of watts. |

A laser or maser will be more efficient, but then very accurate aiming is needed. |

If it's powerful enough to be effective it will cause half the items in its path to melt, char, or burst into flame. [+] |
