I'm just back from trip to the Great Barrier Reef which was very cool. I was inspired to make a geometric version of coral.

The design is based on a truncated icosahedron. The vertices of the truncated icosahedron are connected by a continuous loop (a 'Hamiltonian circuit' in maths terminology). Of course the design could be based on any polyhedron - the more vertices, the more intricate the design.

The 'shade' of the lampshade is provided by a strip of material which extends perpendicularly from the surface of a sphere along the continuous loop.

The continuous loop design might also look good on a soccer ball.

I like the idea to some extent, but I'm concerned about what you might actually manufacture it from. Your illustration seems to suggest plastic, which is not ecologically friendly at all. Might I propose that it be made from real coral, and in that way be 100% natural?

Could you grow coral around a mold? The time it takes would certainly make them valuable.

ooh, spinoff idea. Use a wine bottle as the mold for a 'hey we found this in a shipwreck' effect, either for a candle holder or a wine/whiskey/rum bottle.
