Frustrated about a weak economy? Take the boom synthesizer. After all, its only mechanics. Its too many of the wrong goods available the wrong time. With too few demand. Finetune using the govt. spending increaser, sometimes a little war can help. Constantly check the inflation monitor. Linear and
nonlinear Phillips-Curves built in for unemployment targetting. Beware of overheating. When in doubt, consult Al Greenspan.

Do you carry the device around in your flying car? |

Heh. I had a guy tell me once that the reason the economy was so good during the Clinton years was because it took that long for 'trickle-down economics' to work. I thought he was joking, but he insisted he wasn't. |
Bill Clinton is the luckiest man who ever lived. |
Really? I think it's Paul Allen. |
Ugh. [Insert economist joke here]
I think this is baked in some form by every introductory economics textbook ever created. |
Whacking the bottom 8 keys on a Roland Jupiter-8 set to factory patch 64 will produce a nice boom, provided you EQ for it. |
So this idea is not about sailing? |
Sounds WIBNI, as do some of the Chicago/Friedman alikes, who think the economy, i.e. human behavior, is "just mechanics". |

Alan Greenspan will be missed when his tenure ends |
I agree that Greenspan will be missed. I notice Meyers resigned his seat on the Fed today. |

<synthaside> Hah! I just got a DX7 given to me yesterday! True. The donator had just gotten a Kurzweill K2600xs, which I covet, (and I mean really, really covet) and decided to cast off his old DX7 on me. Now I just have to figure out how to get MIDI set up and all that junk. |

The DX7 is an interesting beast. A friend of mine had one with a replacement ROM that had some really cool features (ability to use custom scales so Bach's "Well Tempered Clavier" would come out right, etc.) Antique by today's standards (15+ years old) but still going strong. BTW, I think those things use Dallas Semiconductor battery-backed memories. I have a few grumbles about DS, but they've more than met their 10-year life claims for data retention. |
Back on-topic, sorta: I think for a good "boom" effect you probably want to use some low-pitched sine waves amplitude-modulated by the LFO. I don't remember what frequency ranges you can specify on the DX-7, but you should be able to put in something that would give your subwoofers a real workout. |

Congratulations on your new Yahama museum piece. :) The whole operator FM technique (additive synthesis I think was the buzzword at the time) never gelled with me. I was too engrossed in analog. And Rods accurately observes the other reason I disliked it - control. I was used to having buttons and sliders and knobs available to program on the fly. "Wallpapering through the letterbox" is a perfect description for the one button incrementing on the DX. It's all what you're used to, I guess. (OTOH, I loved the SY77.) |

Thanks [Waugs]. Well, this is a learning thing. If I am taken with the experience I'd like to buy a K2600AES or something more serious. And it is a museum piece, like Rods said, it is about 15 years old, has a broken key, but it was free. I really like free. Plus he threw in a little Roland synth box, too. |
Free works. Broken key... is it the B two octaves below middle C? |
Oh.. um, on topic. Finance treasury dollars mumble mumble economy. |
no, the B below the highest C what the Fed's next move is. |
It doesn't go boom like the economy |
AHA! I KNEW you were all keyboard players. Well someone left an OSCar round my house and the best noise it ever made was when I threw it out of the window. |
