There's a bar in Washington D.C. that's wall-to-wall bookshelves; patrons get browsing rights. Alas, the selection is a little odd and the owner is more than a little odd, neither in a good way, which limits its appeal. |
Of course, there's very little stopping people from bringing their own books and reading at any bar. I did a lot of studying for my comprehensives at the Brickskeller. |
What's the advantage (to the owner) over the fairly-common restaurant/bookstore combo? In the latter, patrons buy the books before dripping hot sauce and beer on them. |

As much as I like to read, when I go into a bar I am there for some serious drinking, not for perusing the existentialist philosophers. Something like this would work better in a coffee bar than a "real" bar. |

It would be fun to watch drunks react to some of our more surreal fictional novels ("Sir, I'm telling you we don't mix pan-galactic gargle blasters (sp?)") |
<quote> Drinking more than one pan galactic gargle blaster is like having your brains bashed out with a slice of lemon..........wrapped around a large gold brick <quote> |

The last thing I want to do when I am drunk is read. Dizzyness. |
I wonder what it would be like to have manga in one? |
Would you have drunk guys doing the little girl voices? That would be hilarious! Make sure the manga have furigana, though. And not the tiny baby little furigana that they can't read, either, but good size furigana. Heck, make the whole thing large print. |
What if the selections were all children's books? |
Dr. Seuss? Drunk people trying to do the 'Fox in Socks' routine would score high on the hilarity meter. |

It's hard to read books in a bar |
And when you leave it in your car |
You may not know quite where you are |
Why did you read books in that bar? |
