This system would consist of an accelerometer/orientation tracker, a sensor for height, a small battery, some software, and four CO2 cartridges. The cartridges would be affixed to all four corners of the laptop. When falling the laptop would use the cartridges as jets to orient and slow its fall at the last minute.

We now have the technology to improve on this. What's needed is a cage that holds the laptop. When it senses that it is falling, the cage uses small thrusters to hover a couple of feet above the ground, and lowers the laptop on a cable gently to the floor, before releasing and jetting off out of the way.
