'really worried about dolphins' new nets

new fishing nets that don't kill dolphins

I thought that we as a world had this problem vaguely under control but my worries about dolphins began again when I noticed that cat food tins never have a dolphin friendly logo on them. Dolphins, particularly around Britain, are increasingly getting caught in those massive trawl nets. Surely its possible for these nets to have small pockets to catch little fish but too small to trap dolphins; they would also have big holes to allow the dolphins through. It would mean less fish but also less dolphin deaths and anyway the fish reserves are diminishing anyway. I would pay more for dolphin friendly fish.

Just one of the numerous sites that can be found if you search for 'dolphin friendly'. http://www.earthisl...ID=123&journalID=44
Although the article is couched in some emotive language, it does illustrate my point. [DrBob]

Although swivel6 is right about the law in the USA, it doesn't actually stop the problem (see link), and it also does nothing to preserve the fish stocks that the dolphins depend on. The best solution to animal conservation is to stop eating them.

so which of you clowns gave me a fish?

Cat food tuna isn't dolphin friendly? No wonder it tastes better!

why not just don't eat fish?

Re-engineer the dolphin. If we make them as small as shrimps then they could swim through current fishing nets. Also tiny dolphins would make groovy household pets, like goldfish but without the unfortunate dieing when they escape the tank.

       Bwahahahahaha.

The solution is farm fish. Farmed carp would make fine fish food. This would also make jobs in the third world.

       ... but they like chicken.

Dolphins are being caught in chicken nets?
Worldgineer, Aug 27 2003

I politely disagree, bungston. Unlike the taste difference between wild game vs. livestock, farmed fish are sucky.

The real solution is to train these highly intelligent marine mammals in the art of shepherding.

Skilled dolphins can then be employed by individual fishing enterprises. They would corral schools of fish by swimming in circular patterns in large numbers thus creating cyclonic currents that trap the fish. The dolphins would then be paid for their labor in fish.

This allows the fishing industry to become an industrious cooperative between man and marine mammal.

Dolphins, of course, would eventually organize into unions...

I second [dare99]'s idea for small pet dolphins. That would flatout rock.
n-pearson, Aug 27 2003

I think they don't bother with the logo 'cause cats can't read. (+)

cats don't shop either. mores the pity.
po, Aug 28 2003

As if "dolphin safe" actually means what it says. That just means it has to have under a certain amount of dolphins killed in the process.

       Cats should be vegetarians anyway.
jivetalkinrobot, Aug 29 2003

       oh no they zouden.

If we just rid the earth of cats ... we could feed the hungry and clothe the naked ... o yeah, and save the dolphins
MrNotorious, Apr 30 2004

But then crazy cat people would start collecting masses of pumas, or heaven forbid, chihuahuas.

I notice that there is "dolphin friendly" tuna on the shelves but the blurb on the tuna that the cat eats doesn't mention it.
