A mechanism that any cable can be drawn through, from drum or box, that can be loaded with a coloured permanent marker. The mechanism would allow a coloured line to be placed along the length of the cable.
Once these cables are installed, making a hole in a wall and finding a cable means almost instant
identification.

I wonder if this can't be done electronically instead.
If you place a coil next to a cable, and put a signal
through that coil, it should induce that signal into the
cable. A receiver, held near the cable further along,
should be able to pick up that signal, thereby
identifying the cable. |

Good idea. Also see [link]. Commercially available
versions from a number of sources. |

An electronic device means every man and his dog has to have one. The marks give information built in to designed layout for anyone to see. |

If you're doing a large number of installations, you
just buy the cable already marked. If you're doing
one or two, this might be useful, but the number of
different marker colors you're going to have is
probably limited. |

This idea has the merit of simplicity, plus it doesn't need power. |

To make the most of different colour markers, you may need a companion device to lay a base coat of tipp-ex. |

To extend your range of markings, a mechanical interrupter could raise and lower the pen as you pull. Interchangeable cams would let you choose from plain dotted, dot/dash/dot, SOS, etc. |

//Vermilion green// So, aimed at red/green colour-blind people? |

[pertinax] Nope, purely spat out by my neural processing. I think, [mitxela] has the color blind thing covered. see above |

/number of different color markers/
You could use more than one marker in the
mechanically interrupted sequencer. Interrupted
marks would be more conservative of marker juice. |

The more the complex the printing the slower feed. Most jobs you would just want to pull the cable from the box, which is quite fast. The simpler the better. I don't want to get in the way of the job or else I am costing more than the label can help. |
