"No suck" wastebasket

Never again find yourself wrapping your legs around the wastebasket

I've had many occasions when preparing to take out the garbage where I've found myself clamping my legs about the wastebasket in order to overcome the suction created between the trash bag and the inside of the wastebasket. Why not have a basket with a weighted bottom, and a vent passage that goes from the bottom of the basket to a level at or near the top? This would effectively equalize the pressure above and below the bag, eliminating the need to overcome any sort of vacuum. I thought about just putting holes near the bottom of the basket, but this could be messy, as it would also have a potential to leak profusely. I know this is probably baked, but I've never seen one or I'd surely have bought it.

mihali's right. The "no-suck" feature's not mentioned in the idea, but it's pointed out by Quarterbaker in an annotation.

More importantly, there's a link from here that makes both ideas look baked. [Monkfish, Oct 05 2004, last modified Oct 17 2004]

My kitchen waste-bin has a moulded cavity on the outside to permit insertion of a foot. This performs a similar function (retaining bin on floor while bag is pulled out), but whether it does it better is, I suppose, a matter of opinion.

Welcome X2. This is a nice basic idea that seems easy to do and quite useful. You've described it well also. Have a croissant.

Great idea! Here's the easy-bake recipe:

Get a length of clear vinyl hose and some clear packaging tape. Trim the hose to be the same length as the height of the trash can. Use a diagonal cut on the lower end. Tape the hose to the inside of the trash can, preferably in a corner if the can is rectangular. Install the liner as usual. Instant suckless trash can.

i can't help but think that we've done this one before, and it was found to be baked.

       good idea though.

Indeed. I considered my version better than the bottom-vented version for the same reason [X2Entendre] states - no leaks.

I'm not sure that I agree with the hose thing. I'm wondering about pushing/pulling that volume of air through a smallish (maybe 1" i.d. or so?) hose without much pressure. Somebody test it out and let me know how I should vote.

Also, I wonder how much air will be able to pass through a vinyl hose, against the wall of a trash bin, that is regularly so full of trash, that air cannot find passage around the can's entire inner circumference(implying the hose will be crushed flat).

I've never seen or heard of such a thing, but I'd definitely buy one.

       Excellent.

Added a link to a patent filed in 2001 and awarded in 2003 that describes this idea.

I want trash bags that have a CO2 cartridge on the outside bottom. Gathering the neck of the full bag and closing it activates the cartridge, which pressurizes the bottom of the can beneath the bag, and facilitates removal of the full, possibly heavy bag.

Caution: Take care not to place bag in can inside-out.
