Release a cover version of Desmond Dekker's "The Israelites", but instead of singing the proper words, sing all the various mistakenly heard lyrics - most famously of course "My ears are alight". This probably has potential to be a ironic novelty Christmas number one, but more importantly will allow
us old folk to laugh at teenagers who have never heard the original and have no idea that the wrong lyrics are being used.
Suggested lyrics include:

Quietly mocking the youngsters, eh? I like the slice of your loaf. Is there a lower age limit to being one of "us old folk"? (I'm 26, occasionally going on 60). |

There used to be an advert (for Maxell audio tapes, if memory serves) where some guy would hold up cards with the misinterpreted lyrics for this song on them. Was this part of your inspiration hippo? |

I can't stop whistling always look on the bright side of life, it's taking over, just look at my profile, it's too addictive and catchy, help!!!! |

[talen]: That song is good
enough for Iehovah... |

Hm. "The Kids are Alright" has a whole new meaning lately. |

Re the idea: not that you need further reason to laugh at me, but I've never heard the original. |

Actaully, you may have heard it without realizing it. It's been in a couple of popular movies a few years back. Can't think of which ones, though... |

[sild] - I do remember the Maxell ad, but only since I read your annotation. Perhaps a sort of subconscious inspiration... |

I bought the mondegreen (misheard lyrics) book when people in the bookstore started looking at me to see what was so funny. |

I like the misheard version of the Elton John song 'Don't let your son go down on me'. |
|
|
Another favourite is the apocryphal version of the Bon Jovi song 'Bad medicine'. It goes: |
|
|
"Thoreau is like Ralph Emerson,
Ralph Emerson is what I read" |
|
|
"Brown apes on mattresses tied up with string... these are a few of my favorite things." |

'scuse me, while I kiss this guy.. |
