Survive the attack of the living dead as long as possible

The rules are simple. One person is "it" and they play the live human, the rest of the group plays the zombie horde. The game is played in a defined area determined by how many people are playing, the more, the larger the playing area, delineated by cones or other means.

The person who's it can run as fast as they can, the people playing the zombies can only walk like a zombie. To make sure they don't cheat there might be a cadence that they can step to, perhaps called out by the referee or by a song playing (Thriller by Michael Jackson perhaps).

When a zombie and living person meet, the living person can kill the zombie with a head shot. Since no weapon is used in this game, a simple touch to the front of the body "tagging" the zombie kills it. The zombie so tagged can't walk any more and they just stop in place. The only way a zombie can kill the living person is to tag them on the back. Since they're moving very slowly compared to the living person, the only way this is going to happen is if the living person lets themselves get overrun.

Now most zombies are stupid, but these zombies are different. They're all former Halfbakers from before the zombie apocalypse. They can come up with strategies such as forming a line that closes around the person causing the person to have to carefully hit only the zombies on the end, that sort of thing.

If each zombie gets tagged in the front, the living person wins. If the living person gets tagged in the back, the zombies win.

The zombie who "kills" the living person, now fortified with a meal of delicious brains, comes back to life.

But... for how long?

Hmm. I think it might work better with initially 50:50 zombies and non-zombies. And it should be possible for the human/zombie to convert a zombie/human into a human/zombie.

When there's only one human, or only one zombie left, they're the winner.

That way, lots of interesting strategies emerge. For example, if there are only a few humans left, it's in each zombie's interests to try to get converted to a human, and then hope that the other humans get converted to zombies, etc.

       That could be interesting.

Occurs to me, another way to keep the cadence would be all the zombies chanting. What would they chant? Well, duh.

       "BRAINS!... BRAINS!... BRAINS!... BRAINS!..."

With the right sort of rules, all sorts of strategies might emerge. Sort of like "go", except that the side you're on could change through your own actions or those of others.

Man, I think there are lots of possibilities. It sounds fun.

Another thing you could do is have the live person have a dodge ball that they have to hit the "zombies" with. (a dodge ball is just a very soft 12" around ball that doesn't hurt much when it hits you) This sounds like it would be advantageous for the "living" person except that after the ball bounces off, you need to retrieve it. If it lands around a bunch of zombies you're going to have a hard time retrieving it without getting tagged/killed/eaten.

Sounds like excellent fun. It would make for some interesting strategy studies as you varied the mix and rules.

Reminds me something of British Bulldogs.
