The router chooses a channel, based not only on its own RF environment, but that of its clients,

so you're not sitting in the backyard 100 feet away from your router battling for airtime with 2 other routers that are 50 feet away on the same channel.

       That would certainly be more convenient than having to walk back to the house and find out if anybody's on the phone or in the middle of downloading a movie or something before manually changing channels. However, I think a small directed EMP device would suffice.
