Water Skylight
A large skylight with enough water in it to make your home feel like the bottom of a swimming pool | |
It would basically be a glass-bottomed wading pool on top of your house, which I know is baked by rich freak-o's, but I'd really like to have a whole room with that crazy sunlight effect going on. It's so relaxing.
Roof Pools
I mentioned this in my idea, but it wasn't the central concept. [Worldgineer, Feb 11 2005]

I think this is a splendid idea! [+] At the U.S. National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD, they have floodlights on the ceiling behind panes of glass full of water, just like this, to give you the feeling of being underwater with the fish. |

Beautiful. It may be pesky to clean, but also you might like the life that grows there (except for the mosquitos.) |
Or, have an option to have it sealed. |
For parties, you could put things in the water (dye, balls, fish, etc), and then drain it afterwards. |
Install a speaker in the sealed chamber, and you can create patterns on the water and your room. |

[World]-that's an extra-cool idea. Super and duper. [soph] Dye! Dye! Dye! If the room were furnished all white you could change its color on a regular basis. Red for evil times, blue-green for relaxation, purple for when the Artist Currently Known as Prince comes over. |

At the national art gallery in Ottawa there is a courtyard fountain whose bottom is glass. The entrance to the theatre is below the fountain and it is amazing to watch people who haven't been there before detour around the "puddle" on the floor caused by refracting sunlight. |

Call it a forecourt if you like, but don't think indoor golf is an option. |
