Give independence to Wales! Autonomy while attached to England is no independence at all. Let us plan a route whereby the Welsh achieve true geographical independence. Along the border country, preferably just inside Wales, drill very, very deep holes every few feet. As winter approaches divert the Severn
River to fill these holes and hope for a very cold snap. If this plan works Wales will be torn apart from England by the expanding ice and will drift easily into the Irish Sea. Future plans to ensure economic survival could incorporate offshore banking for rich English and a permanent Steven Spielberg film studio using the now unemployed locals.

What have the English done for us?

Baked. I believe that Offa's Dyke was constructed with exactly this purpose in mind. Didn't work though. |

Ireland is doing very nicely these days, Peter.
They've become experts at extracting grants from the EEC... |
ravenswood, Wales doesn't have the economy to support such a major engineering project. |
Maybe we should make a joint plea to the EEC griffin - money to dig the Welsh holes, and money to rebuild Hadrian's wall? (maybe even add a few extra feet to the height) |
After all what have the English ever done for the Welsh? |

NHstud1216 is propably reffering to having scotland going indy. Unfortunatly, Scotland voted on that subject in 1977, and the results came back negative. Sure, Scotland was independent for a time after the union of scotland in 1005. But that was when the local economy thrived on the local cabbage, and how many blackish grey stones you had. Then in 1296, scotland was annexed by england. Then 10 years later, after a lot of fighting, scotland was independent. This lasted until the union of the crowns in 1603, when James the VI/I gained the thrown of england. So, in effect it's not scotland wanting independence. It's england. |

[But then, NHstud1216 knew that, being such a "Whiz in world history"] |

I can trace my family back to Rob Roy McGregor on my maternal granmothers side, the writer and governer of Canada John Buchan on my maternal granfathers side. Nothing that i know of yet on my dear old pappy's side. |

hey and you know what else? if we all look back far enough we can find our ancestors in primæval soup. (I got 13 years of abuse at school in Scotland for being English and I'm completely sick of it. People who say they're proud to be French but can trace their ancestry back to Genghis Khan, people who wouldn't be anywhere but Boston, but are really proud to have come over on a potato blight boat. Grow up.) |

lewisgirl: Ancestral roots are very important to some people. My family were poor, they had to work for everything had. My family was once disowned for some previous sins of my greatgrandmother. I have to cling to any shread of heritage that comes my way, and i'm not going to let anybody take that away from me. |

waugsqueke: If you wish to make fun of the plight of my family, please do it with a Monty Python sketch. I'm sure you can think of the correct one. |

What if England drifted off instead? |

//Unfortunatly (sic), Scotland voted on that subject in //1977, and the results came back negative |

true and not true. The vote was for devloution and 52% of those who voted, voted for devolution. But then the British government changed the criteria to mean it required 50%+ of the entire population, not just those who voted. Given no country (other than the old communist ones) ever have 100% turn out, this somewhat stacked the odds against devolution. |
Oh, and the vote was 1 March 1979. |
/Given no country (other than the old communist ones) ever have 100% turn out/ -- not strictly true. There have been several elections in which the turn out has been significantly greater than 100%. |

So, mcscotland, can i assume that you are in favour of econmic suicide, i mean independence? |
Oh look, an idea about Wales has been hijacked by the Scots contingent, what a surprise. England has been responsible for some terrible acts in the past, especially in Eire where the Scots were more than happy to help us. We were bad and we deserve to be punished, but the best way to do that is to stick around. Why let us of the hook by going for independence? |
No, sctld, I'm happy enough with devolution. |
you can't have autonomy because we're going to autonomise ourselves of YOU first...and your derelict mining industry (guess who used it all up hehehe) |
in fact i think we should drift the lot of you (Scotland+Wales+Ireland) out to sea and let you fend for yourselves (that inludes how to float) |
Chud, not all people in Scotland want independence at this time. i for one would love to see Scotland independent, but unfortunatly that would mean joining Europe and adopting the Euro and becomeing a full blown memeber of the Federal Eurostate. For me, Union with England is the lesser of two evils. Plus, if ytou do that, you might find some militant Irish Royalist leaving a burning bag of dogshite on your door with the words 'The next ones a bomb' written on a little gift tag next to it. |

Yes! Let's hook the nuclear plant on Ynys Mon up to a big ol'rotor, lay in a south westerly heading, and drop the anchor (Wrecsam maybe) somewhere in the tropics. Then every year we can move up into the arctic circle just north of Iceland for winter sports. |

gazz: I'm told that everyone in South Wales hates everyone in North Wales, and everyone in Cardiff and Swansea has "a healthy rivalry". But hating the English is an eternal passion. |
