The word "How?" springs to mind at this point.

Essentially, what it says in the title - equipment might include visors, harnesses and air-blowers (to recreate that wind in your ears sensation) while virtual worlds might feature interesting car journeys with open windows, enclosed barns filled with cats, multi-dog experiences with smell-o- matic enhancements. Owners might be able to connect via a differently configured headset to join in and become part of the experience, opening up a host of other cross-species options and experiences.

Neat idea, but been done. Not sure about the smellomatic and wind attachments though. https://www.google....BAQ&sclient=gws-wiz
The box shown is a prank, but VR for doggos is a thing. [doctorremulac3, Apr 25 2022]

I am still not seeing the specific technical equipment and software to build a true-to-life simulation of licking another dog's poo

The only problem I see is that smell is such a powerful part of how dogs experience things, I'm skeptical about how much enjoyment they'd get from any of it without the smell-o-matic. Any idea how well those work?

Hamsters, they're small so take up less space, put a VR headset on them place them in a hamster ball in a cradle with ball bearings at all contact surfaces to allow free movement of the hamster ball without it actually running around all over the floor, connect to the internet & use them in place of AI for your NPC animals, you could have warehouses full of them for big game worlds.

Or use chickens .. (simulated) free range battery hen farms with a side- line in renting out their chickens as non-artificial AI.

We could use that as a small revenue stream to help fund the intelligent mouse project.

//The only problem I see is that smell is such a powerful part of how dogs experience things,//

Dogs do use their eyes a lot, although like you say, smell is a huge part of their total sensory input. It worries me a little with mouse-based neuroscience where they use videos/visual input as stimulus. Mice are REALLY not vision driven, they'd be legally blind as humans. I wonder if they're carefully controlling the smell/sound/vibration environments well enough.
