Up-side-down Ping-Pong

Table Tennis with a twist

This is just like regular Ping Pong except instead of a net, there is a solid barrier 1 meter high the players can not see through that is supported about 6” off the table, so that there is an opening for the ball to pass through. The players can see each other but the strategy of the game would be to use the barrier to partially hide your hand and paddle movements. The players can not see the ball until it shoots out from the opening. The ball must bounce off the table before it goes through the opening. If it hits the wall, and does not go through, on serve, of course, that’s a foul. If it goes through but touches the edge of the wall on service that’s a let. After a clean serve, the idea is to confuse the other player with your ball coming through at surprising angels. Of course, after service, if your ball ricochets off the edge, but goes on through, all the better to defeat the other player’s defense. Players have to be very sharp, with lightening quick reactions and very accurate returns.

       I wanted a helium-filled ball that bounces across the ceiling.

       Well, perhaps the theological aspect of ping-pong could be examined

       //helium-filled ball

       That'd be really annoying, making a higher pitched sound when struck,

       Yay! Welcome to the Inventory.

       Large nets with holes might prove subterfuge enough. There could be a gradation of nets, based on visibility and difficulty.

       I don't see the necessity of the ball bouncing off the table first (bun pending clarification).

       That's typical of the service shot, no?

       Hello [Altoidain]. Be aware that you have made several spelling mistakes in this idea and some people will not tolerate this. Other than that, have fun here!

       well perhaps angels are meant to be surprised.

       Anyways, it isn't mentioned whether the bounce on the original side is for the serve. You'd think, for continuous play, you'd be aiming through the hole.
FlyingToaster, Oct 10 2014

       I kind of assume that it means you have to aim for the table just to your side of the opening, which is pretty much how it would have to work anyway.

       I might modify it so that there is a "neutral" bounce area maybe a foot to either side of the opening that you can always bounce a shot in. I would also make the neutral area somewhat narrower than the table, since hitting in this area would also count towards the bounce required on the opponents side (that it is, if it hit in this area and then went "out" it would still count). If it doesn't hit in this area, it must hit on your side only once per volley, and it must hit your opponents side once to count.

       Do you think a ping pong ball could be struck through a medium that would sort-of refract it? I mean in the sense of changing its direction, not the sense of spreading it out into a rainbow.

       If the sides of the table were built up, so that the whole table formed a large, shallow box, this could be filled with ether which is of course denser than air. You might then almost get the effect you're after, with the ping-pong ball slowing slightly more as it passes through the ether than it would if travelling only through air. Playing on an ether-filled table would not be hazardous at all.
