There's a programme on Radio 4 called 'File On Four'.
It
normally reports on something considered
problematic
and doesn't wrap it up and make it seem all nice and
sorted out at the end. However, the music which
finishes it off has a nice resolvy feel to it and makes
you think "oh, that's
all right then". And it obviously
isn't.
I'm sure this is true of news and current affairs
programmes generally and it's really inappropriate.
I'm
okay with the big thumpy dramatic music at the
beginning of such broadcasts because, well, lots of
big
thumpy dramatic things are about to be talked about.
But on the whole the stuff they go on about isn't
sorted
by the end so the music at the end is a lie.
Hence there should be really uneasy, unsettling
horror
film style music which doesn't resolve at all but just
cuts out suddenly at the end of news and current
affairs broadcasts, because it would be more honest.
It
should creep the hell out of you, because that's what
the news does.
Or maybe Yakety Sax.
Careful with that Axe, Eugene.

[+] and for added effect, once the music has cut out suddenly,
there should be seven seconds of silence interrupted only by a
randomly-chosen sound effect. |
|
|
Feeling bad is not an end in itself. |
|
|
If you want people to do something about a horrible situation - a
long shot, I know - then you want them to go away resolute, not
just feeling horrible. |
|
|
If you object to "resolved", you may be getting in the way of
"resolute". |
|
|
All we need, then, is greater semantic clarity in music, so that
listeners know that the sense of resolution is meant to be
optative, and attached to them, and not indicative, nor attached
to the world. How hard could that be? |
|
|
Or just start the "shave and a hair-cut" knock, and drive everybody who doesn't watch the news on that channel nuts when their OCD audience responds with "two bits !". |
|
|
Brilliant. I'd like to see it taken a step further and
have the entire news broadcast be edited with quick
cuts and cryptic, short descriptions of the events that
were put together to look like a movie trailer. |
|
|
[+] Some ethereal, spine shivering, biaural beat electronic music to stimulate subconscious connections. The news presenter could be hypnotoad. |
|
|
Left field: I am wondering what happens to the subconscious when an open ended question is implanted under hypnosis ( even subtly). |
|
|
[dr3], apropos your movie-trailer effect, I'm seeing footage of
Theresa May dancing in Kenya, intercut with the slowly
spreading smile of Nigel Farage. That should tick the "creepy"
box. |
|
|
That's exactly along the lines of what I was
thinking. All news today is completely biased, why
not put some art into it? Anti Trump networks
would show the fires in California with burned out
homes, lists of the dead and a overlay of Trump
laughing hysterically. The other side would show
Clinton doing the same thing. |
|
|
Tell me people wouldn't love this. I don't think
there's any money in straight news anymore. It's
about getting people excited, getting dopamine
flowing, getting adrenalin up. Unbiased, accurate
information? Psh. |
|
|
Kinda want to put that as a new idea, with
appropriate credit given to nineteenthly's
inspiration. |

Last night I listened to a fantastic radio show while driving.
But the music was psychedelic and almost put me to sleep. So
beware of what music you put on and at what hours. It could
be dangerous. |

|
[Ian], that clip reminds me of an image which has
haunted me for most of my life, of the scene in the
film version of 'Tommy' where his parents come out of
the church, and I always imagine the speakers
emitting discordant peals as a foreshadowing. |

Hire John Williams to write some Jaws-style "lurking menace" music. [+] |
|
|
+ yes, like the Twilight Zone musical scores! |
|
|
For a good read try "Gun, With Occasional Music". |
|
|
The news has eliminated speech and just plays the music, chosen to fit events. |
|
|
"Alexa, play the fear music" |
|
|
You could always go for the Mastermind theme tune, which is
aptly named "Approaching Menace". |
