An underwater hullaballoon would not require the lifting gas to be pumped among the balloons, as their size variation would be caused directly by the pressure gradient of the water.

[+] picturing a Ferris-wheel contraption to get maximum pressure differential.

It was always a yellow submarine like vessel.

If such a vehicle were operated at such a depth that the balloons reached the surface, they could be used like a bucket brigade to bring fresh air down to the vehicle in a very energy efficient way, by using the buoyancy of the expanding, ascending, stale air balloons to counteract that of the contracting, descending, fresh air ones.

An arrangement would be needed to empty and refill the balloons, at both the top and the bottom of the cycle, but it would operate across a very small pressure gradient and so require little energy.

Essentially, that was [FlyingToaster]'s suggestion under Self Pumping Snorkel. I've not included this in the main idea, as it puts just as much complexity back in!

Perfect. That was your idea, after all.

Mine's a Hullaballoon in form rather than function. In order to combine the two into your idea, you'd be limiting yourself to a depth where the balloons actually breach the surface.

Quite. Hence they are separate but complementary ideas.
