USB C connectors are really small and my thought is that Steve Jobs would be turning over in his grave if he knew how fragile they were. They're adorably tiny, I guess to impress with how much technostuff can be crammed into such a little space but structurally they're a disaster. Regular movement around the desk and these things start bending and threatening to break. Structurally they're horrible compared to old USBs that never had this issue.

So the idea is to just have a simple male USB C connector that has a strong metal skirt about 2 inches wide and about as tall as a typical laptop with a sticky side that you peel and stick to your computer. On the other side is the female connector you stick your cables in. Make it out of titanium maybe. Then if you have an accident by moving your computer the connector plugged into the reenforcement element might break, but the computer's is left intact. And if the reenforcement connector breaks, no big deal, just buy another one for 8 bucks or so.

And hey, if this is already baked let me know where to get one.

Interesting idea, I would think that the height would be the issue, it is not going to have enough structural rigidity to stop everything being damaged if you yanked the cable upwards or downwards.

The obvious solution is to pull your cables before you start waving your laptop around.

I used to have a computer with one of those magsafe power cables. I don't see why that kind of magnetic connection should not be used to pass-through the USB-C connections.

After carefully designing such a thing in my head I then found the product <link>

Thank you poc, just bought one.

I think the design theory is that the cables give so that the other side of the connection doesn't have to, or something like that.

I prefer the styles that have a 90 degree turn at the c- end, like these. (Link)

But this magnetic hookup seems even better. So as long it's not near a hard drive.
