Two-column categories

Requires nasty scripting.

On the new ideas page, the Category box can take a while to scroll through. This has the side-effects that:
- it can be harder to notice a matching category
- there is less incentive for newbies to use it properly.

So make it easier to browse by using two boxes in place of the one. The first box shows only top-level genres (food, car, fasion, etc). When you select one of those, the second box appears next to it, letting you select a category from within that genre. The contents of the box are updated whenever you change genre.

If you ever get a third level, a third box could appear.

Yes, this would require lots of nasty client-side scripting, but it's perfectly doable.

Three Column Categories http://www.halfbake...:t=All_20Categories
Not exactly what you're asking for, but this may prove useful (I think degroof put it together in the first place.) [DrCurry, Aug 07 2002, last modified Oct 04 2004]

       you have a *book*?

       It's a *metaphor*.
NickTheGreat, Aug 07 2002

thought it might have been a work of fiction about either a welsh steam train or a little wooden doll who has a friend with large aural organs.

A book of fishboned ideas, perhaps. 1kg.
And 'Nick's Croissants'. 1g.

[blissmiss]: I can't believe it... are you ~insulting my intelligence~?
NickTheGreat, Aug 07 2002

I don't believe that is possible.

By the way, I never made it to the third level of the Halfbakery. Was there a secret door I missed somewhere?
DrCurry, Aug 07 2002

you have to jump over blissmiss, take a croissant and type in XfishboneX - thats a cheat. I did not tell you that.

Thanks for that link, [DryCurry]! That's helpful now that one of my previous methods of finding a category for an idea I'm posting has stopped working. (It was to use the browser's "find" function in the category picker on the new idea page, but Chrome stopped being willing to find in there and I think Firefox never was.)

(I'm saying this on this idea, rather than the more relevant one where such a view was also linked, because: a) I saw this one first, b) this one was posted first, and c) I don't want to get sucked into a debate on the proper procedure for finding a category for one's idea.)
