Tossing The Telescopes

The Highland Games in Scotland feature various feats of strength of which Tossing The Caber is the pinnacle event. This is where massive men (and now women I imagine) see how far they can toss a large wooden telegraph pole across a muddy field.

As with most of these events, innovation and improvement are always possible. Scotland is now completely treeless, having cut down all of its trees to make cabers, so a new range of objects suitable for tossing is required.

This brings us naturally to look around and see what's available which is why we arrive easily at the doors of the larger telescopes. These are all redundant now. This is because the James Webb sees all and knows all, making most of those existing telescopes become like AA batteries compared to nuclear power stations. ie puny and disposable. Their new purpose sees them dismantled and brought to the Highlands for the updated, expanded Tossing The Telescopes Event.

The rules are simple. Instead of tossing boring old wooden poles, competitors now see how far they can toss multi-million pound/dollar/eruo exquisitely engineered telescopes. For added variety, these may be joined by TV masts, 3G towers and with other items of technology facing redundancy, but the telescopes take pride of place.

Note: Dressing up as an astronomer or wearing some other type of geek clothing is optional but must feature a kilt being worn.

That's quite the depth of field...

Sorry; lovely idea and all that but the caber toss is not about distance, rather precision and consistency.

In other words domesticated and quite ordinary, which is why the alternative event of Tossing The Telescope is on the Halfbakery ie the total opposite. Sometimes (often) I wonder why I bother to post anything here any more.

Keep on posting! I forgot to mention that I nearly wet myself laughing at 'Tossing the telescope'. Brilliant.

It seems to be age-related [a1]
