Wooden pallet with drive train similar to a mobility chair, and GPS/map guidance, and some sensors. Just load it up, and enter the destination. Good for non-time sensitive local delivery.

Got the idea from watching a person "road" a scissor lift 2 miles to the rental yard, because he was to cheap to pay for pickup. We joked he could clamp the forward switch, and have a pint in the bar before it reached the next intersection.

Theft might be a problem, but it's way better than that Hare Freight.

[2 fries] is right about the theft problem.... also, kids will proabably ride the things .....

AGVs like this, which follow a buried wire, have been used in industrial applications for many years. A fully autonomous unit using GPS is probably quite practical ..... but it's going to be quite a high value piece of kit ..... some sort of smart security will be needed.

There's hundreds of ideas for security and anti-theft on the wonderful site www.halfbakery.com! If even a few could be implemented, you could use this to ship your gold bars across town.

Enclose it in a large heavy sphere, and it could slowly tumble to its destination, contents secured inside. Boulder Freight, when it absolutely has to be there in a swath.
