The word "How?" springs to mind at this point.

This is an idea (now baked) for a large snakes and ladder board made from small tiles. When it's raining at school, the kids can play in the hall during break time.
The tile colours are varied according to position.
Typically the tiles are 2.5 inch(70mm) square and laid out as in the webcam link. The idea is that it will cost no more than tiling with one colour.
Teams of two will take part. One will throw a huge soft dice, and the other will walk on the squares.
The total size of the board is about 20ft (7m) square.

I've seen the plastic mat game, after searching, but I think this is better.

edited: update 2 Mar 2010, due to broken links and home-made baking status.

Yes. In my day it was called 'Chutes and Latters'.

       <did you know? (from memory)>
The game originated in India, where the 'ladders' signified the steps to 'Nirvana', and the 'snakes' signified the sins.

The trouble with snakes and ladders is that it is a duff game. No skill involved.
The basic concept is a good one, though. Could you do a different game instead?

       It's for kindergartners, Loris.

Trivial Pursuit. Fun for the kids, and educational.

Snakes and Ladders is a Christian indoctrination plot! Think about it. You are supposed to laboriously climb ladders to get higher and higher until you get to the final goal. But don't get tempted by those tricky snakes! You'll slide back into your old sinful ways and have to start all over again.

This is baked in the Western Australian town of Mandurah - the park by the foreshore has a spiralled snakes and ladders tiled on the ground near a playground. The "dice" is simply a circle, cut into six pieces (like a pie), onto which you throw a pebble. It's not as big as the one in your idea, though.

       I'll take a picture when I'm down there. :)

<Too lazy to post> How about a vertical version, where you physically climb ladders and slide down snakes? The snakes could even be hollow.

um... 10 cm is not really any space for standing on the tile.
FireElf, Jul 26 2006

FireElf, the idea is that each mosaic tile is 10cm, making each square about 1m. Finally, 4" (10cm) tiles were not available, so I used 2.5" tiles. See the last link for an out of focus webcam of my baked result. I haven't had time to focus it properly, yet (or sort out the Infra Red). GMT+7 hrs.
