All too often when re-heating food in the microwave the
outside is overcooked while the centre of the dish is cold, as
served by my local publican at my 'working lunch' today.
Thermo-imaging technology could be used to detect the
hottest part of the product and divert microwave energy away
from
these areas towards the cooler part (inner), thus
ensuring an evenly heated lasagne.!!
microwaves cook from the inside > out
http://www.mercola....crowave/hazards.htm you wouldn't get me up in one of those! [po, Feb 19 2002, last modified Oct 04 2004]
Do they?

Micro waves heat food molecules from the inside > out,
but do not heat a mass of food molecules this way. Those
on the outer edges of the food mass will be far hotter
and invariabley overcooked before the centre of the food
portion is heated through. |

my source was a doctor, nurrr. Oh lets go down the pub and research it for ourselves eh, bris, arora. what do they know anyway. |
Thanks for the link bris: 30mm of efficient heating.
Compare that to a 5'' x 4'' lasagne = cold in the middle. |
po: does it serve real ale? |
Pool table and a quiz night on Tuesdays with prizes for all.
Not lasagne, gone off that for a while (it was a vegetable
one though, so I'm not too worried). |
pool? - you are on arora! |
Sorry po: completely lost myself in a heady daydream of
going to the stone flagged real ale "pub" I call heaven.
Sandwiches, swimming kits, homework and school uniforms
to think of ... bu**er. Another night maybe. |

you ask, go on, I dare you... |

Don't microwave ovens already have rotating deflectors to spread the microwaves around? Perhaps we haven't the technology yet to aim at the center of the oven. |
I'd like a directional microwave for doing stuff like melting cheese on top of my food without making the plate too hot. |

Amazing the strange things people devote time to. When they could be at a pub. 6 AM here so too early for beer. |

The obvious solution is to use gamma rays instead of microwaves. Gamma rays can be directed to focus at precise locations. |
A gamma ray oven is going to run you some bucks, though. |
Not to mention the lead contamination from the protective shielding. |
You don't need lead screening if it's a directional beam. Come on, just stand at the other side. |
