Theobromine energy drink

Theobromine is strong and long lasting stimulant

So, energy drinks have been becoming more popular recently. Long story short, one compound found in chocolate, theobromine, is related to caffeine, and is also a stimulant, but it's very powerful withoit the jitteriness and it lasts very long at the right levels, usually around 500mg, equivalent roughly 5 tablespoons cocoa powder. FYI, eant to make it yourself, dissolve the cocoa powder in boiling water, but be warned you need to add sweetness (it's WAYtoo bitter straight), and it hits your stomach like a ton of bricks, at this point it makes me sick, I've grown somewhat averse to it.

So the idea is use extracted theobrominr to make a powerful energy drink. Could be useful for the military.

FYI theobromine is also a vasodilator, and activates endorphines or something that isvalso associated with love in the brain, so it may be a good aphrodisiac. It's also toxic to dogs, so said product may need a warning. And it also acts as a cough suppresant as strong as codeine, weirdly.

       Howabout 'Throb.'

By the title I was sure beanie would be the author.

It's a bronchodilator, so the connection between an antitussive and a vasodilator, both involving smooth muscles and the lumina of hollow cylindrical organs, is fairly clear.

Yes, i could do this but there are better options. It would be interesting to prepare a tincture of cacao. It's been used in inhalers for asthma. The problem would be that people will already be tolerant on the whole because most already eat chocolate. I think the bitterness would not be a problem.

Maybe it'd work as an anti-unrequited love drug.

Could the author please state the invention?

//By the title I was sure beanie would be the author.//

Nah - it would have been "Halogenated theobromine extends the lifespan of coypu threefold and enhances reproductive efficiency while happylonging."

//dissolve the cocoa powder in boiling water//

So the invention is basically hot chocolate?

//but be warned you need to add sweetness// What are you, some kind of nancy-boy? Adding sugar to hot chocolate? Hah. Try chilli instead.

//the invention is basically hot chocolate? // I think the idea is the bit which begins with "So the idea is...".

       // chilli //

       Oooh, Xocolatl... awesome ...

Well I didn't read that far down the idea, give me a break!

       No.

All responsible and caring dog owners know about the dangers of chocolate, caffeine and theobromine. Dog owners that don't know this shouldn't be allowed to own dogs at all, as they are clearly neither responsible nor caring.

Hmm. Interesting - the Borg like dogs

I find many puzzling things in the collective Borg psyche. In particular, I find it hard to reconcile the image of a harmonizing swarm with that of a lover of dogs.
MaxwellBuchanan, May 23 2012

Dogs are pack animals. They work together for the benefit of the pack (= Collective).

       Dogs are therefore Good.

Cats are solitary. They avoid one another; when they can't, there's usually a fight. A noisy one, in the small hours of the morning. After which the combatants retire to their respective territories and crap in flower beds.

Agreed on all counts. Dogs are awesome. Ants suck.

The Borg have changed me. I have come to define my enemies by how vehemently I agree with them.

It was only ever a matter of time ...

"Come ... join us ... don't be afraid ... you'll wonder why you ever hesitated...."

The Collective only dream they could get their clammy little hands on a specimen like [The Alterother]. Anyway, think of all the wonderful arguments you'd never lose if you assimilated me.

Ah, but think of the loyalty scheme points ... we could get that plasma cutter we've had our eye on at Home Depot ...
8th of 7, May 23 2012

You... would buy... a plasma cutter... at HOME DEPOT?!!!

       You disappoint me, sir.
Alterother, May 23 2012

This is in a sense a recipe. It's also incredibly easy to bake. I could start this morning with some vodka from the local offie. Then again, it would be possible to wipe out the human race with a few bits and pieces from the corner shop, or at least that and Homebase, so that in itself isn't a criticism, because it seems unlikely that most people would know how to achieve the second aim and it would probably be a worthy idea for this forum (though irresponsible to post). Therefore, although from my position this looks like a no-brainer, that's not the same as it being trivial.

The cough suppressant part is intriguing. Link?

// You disappoint me, sir. //

We only want it for a desk toy ...
8th of 7, May 24 2012

Desk toy or not, you should still look for quality. Buy a Miller or a PlasTek from a reputable local dealer, with a good service plan. Home Despot is for buying hammers and faucets and parts for scratch-built hydroponic systems, not serious high-tech tools. You should know better!

Um... oh, yeah, er, blah blah stuff about energy drinks. I think a high theobromine content would put regular drinkers at a risk of developing kidney stones. It causes renal failure in dogs, but our system for handling soluable mineral salts is a bit more advanced.

       I like his words //withoit// and //eant// & //isvalso...hmmm.

I provided a recipe to get that amount of theobromine, but the beverage I'm imagining would have straight theobromine added to the liquid.

Like they add caffeine, the theobromine might be synthesized. I don't know if this is possible cost-effectively. Or maybe it could be isolated from chocolate, again, I don't know if this is cost-effective. Caffeine is synthesized cost-effectively, and theobromine is just one extra methyl group different, so I would imagine it would also be cost-effective.

Apparently though there might be issues with this drink. Enough theobromine repeatedly can be bad for you, there are links to cancer or something, and in general it is pharmaceutically active. I wouldn't be surprised if the FDA tried to get involved. But anyway, I was thinking it would be mainly for military use, but purchaseable by the public anyway, like MREs.
EdwinBakery, May 24 2012

It could be made from caffeine, i would expect. I am almost sure it's in holly.

To paraphrase, "No-one ever went broke though underestimating the stupidity of the general public".
