Theft resistant in-bike storage container

Box or bag which cannot be taken without damaging it

Start with a small toolbox, made of some sort of rugged plastic, about the same width and length as a bike water bottle cage, but slightly taller.

Glue a metal plate on the inside bottom of it, and drill holes through the box and plate the same distance apart as the bolts of a bike bottle cage.

Bolt the box to your bicycle, with the bolts going from the inside of the box into one of the metal tubes of your bike, in the same location that a water bottle cage would be mounted.

Put some of your things in the box, and apply a small padlock.

Obviously you shouldn't leave valuables unattended in this box, but it should be a safe enough place to store your spare inner tube, tire change tools, blinkers, etc

This idea is in contrast with the various storage containers that are advertising as attaching and detaching quickly and easily, which is not necessary what everyone wants.

If a thief wants to steal my storage box (without damaging it), he is welcome to take a bolt cutter to the lock (or even pick it), open the lid, take out all my stuff, and unscrew the bolts.

I'm not expecting to slow down a prepared thief, just prevent a casual passerby from saying, "Ooh, velcro!" undoing it with a single yank, and pocketing it... which I'm sure happened to an underseat storage pouch I used to own.

I've always had difficulty with this argument. Shirley being good looking bike is a critical feature of buying a nice bike? It's like having a little thatched cottage with a delightfully informal flowery garden, then, adding a 1998 Ford Focus on bricks, 2 satellite dishes, one rusty, an England flag and some of that B&Q plastic-wood decking. Sure, the tourists won't take photos anymore and it will work just as well from the inside but you WILL have to live with it ALL the time to prevent something that MIGHT happen.

       You've visited [8th] then?

He did, but we hid in the back and kept quiet. We were afraid he might want to borrow money.

       A justified fear.

Indeed. Thy reputation goeth before thee ...
