The Ice Mines of Antarctica

Problem 1: glacial melt off raises sea level and affects ocean salinity changing major currents

Problem 2: lack of fresh water around the planet

It seems that the most straightforward solution is to take the fresh water from where is not needed, and bring it to where it is.

The Middle East, and the American South West would put that Water to good use.

       Autocorrect strikes again, one suspects.

       Indeed

"The Ice Mines of Antarctica" ... Wasn't this a Dr. Who story, with Tom Baker ? Or was it Jon Pertwee ?

Congratulations on having an idea that has plans and apparently financial support behind it! [link]
beanangel, Feb 08 2019

certainly not the first time, beanangel :)

I can't really see the attraction of this. I mean, the usual trick of "walking against the wind" is a bit pointless when there is, in reality, an 80mph freezing wind. And who wants to stand around at -40°C watching some supposedly-amusing guy in a black-and-white striped shirt do... oh, miNes! Sorry.
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 08 2019

Had exactly this idea a few days ago. My thought was to wrap the ice in pykrete.
RayfordSteele, Feb 09 2019

Can the tunneling be designed in such a way as to make chilling music in a blow?
wjt, Feb 11 2019

People have been proposing this since pretty much the discovery of Antarctica (citation needed...).
neutrinos_shadow, Feb 11 2019

without the shadow of a neutrino, but, NOT as a way to combat global warming
theircompetitor, Feb 11 2019

This is probably a stupid question, but, how is taking ice from the poles and letting it melt in-land supposed to stop sea levels from rising? or prevent overall salinity changes?

Oddly enough, Sturton says his doctor believes he may be suffering from salinity. Well, that and hearing loss.
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 11 2019

Surely the solution is just lots of sponges? They occur naturally in the sea, so that's a good starting point.
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 12 2019

Ah, if it's used in the desert it won't melt in the ocean, 2 fries? And don't even think about any water cycle nonsense
theircompetitor, Feb 12 2019

       piss has officially been taken

A more proactive solution would be to instead hasten the melting of the ice caps while buying up inland areas (link). Chosen carefully, these will soon become coastal areas. On the down side London will vanish; on the plus side so will DC.
whatrock, Feb 12 2019

We could take all of Baffin Island, and pile it up in the middle of Canada somewhere. Nobody uses it anyway. More available volume.
RayfordSteele, Feb 12 2019

Would it not make more sense to dredge the sea bottom, harvest the valuable things like shipwrecks, clams and manganese nodules, and then dump the residue on the land?
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 12 2019

//We could take all of Baffin Island, and pile it up in the middle of Canada somewhere. Nobody uses it anyway. More available volume//

We're in the middle of a (minor, but lengthy and gusty) blizzard today, that's had me outside in parka and goggles for two hours so far wielding a variety of snow shovels, during which the downfall changed from snow to ice. There's enough since accumulated to take another pass at it, and later on it's expected to change to freezing rain. All in all it's not that bad, but I seem to be out of rum, which is.

So, guess how many fingers I'm holding up. :D

Anyways, Denmark accidentally invaded Baffin Island in the early '60s, so it's theirs now ; don't let them try to tell you different.
FlyingToaster, Feb 12 2019

Let's play a game of Find The Baker. Get your world maps ready. [FlyingToaster], are you somewhere in southern Ontari-ari-oh-oh-oh? Can you see the Blue Mountains, or are you closer to Scarborough Bluffs?
Sgt Teacup, Feb 12 2019

//are you closer to Scarborough Bluffs// parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.
MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 12 2019

// any water cycle nonsense //

       Mythbusters did that one ....

// On the down side London will vanish; //

Can you explain why that should be considered a "downside" ?

// pile it up in the middle of Canada somewhere. Nobody uses it anyway. //

That's a good idea. There are vast areas of Canada that are utterly devoid of anything useful. Montreal springs to mind ...

// Denmark accidentally invaded Baffin Island in the early '60s, so it's theirs now //

They must have seriously over-indulged the night before. More deserving of pity than condemnation //

// How long are you supposed to cook manganese noodles for? //

       Until the pan melts.

[MaxwellBuchanan], no, no, that's Scarborough FAIRE.
Scarborough BLUFFS is "granite, schist, basaltics and shale".
neutrinos_shadow, Feb 12 2019

That's annoyingly accurate [Sgt] :) I'm about a 15min drive from one, and the other's my summer daytrip default.

What gave it away ? Bear in mind that any reference to "Mayor Mel" will cause me to rifle through your old posts to track your hoser arse down.

       //Ontari-ari-oh-oh-oh// too many oh's not enough ari's.

//WingèdToaster, see response link.// Winged and Whinging : day after tomorrow it'll melt and it's back to "Too warm to ski; too cold to sunbathe" and I'm back to complaining about the lack of winter.

//You're only saying that because Canada has classified you as an invasive species.// Yeah, but he filled the form out as "hegemonizing collective..." and ran away with our butterfly nets while we were consulting a dictionary.
FlyingToaster, Feb 13 2019

       //don't even think about//

       Trying ... not ... to ...

Damn, I thought about the water cycle.
