So you're at work, and you're a bit stressed. Your colleagues are getting at you, your clients are demanding, your intray is threatening to take over your entire desk and there's no coffee left. Time for a visit to the Gloom Room.
It's dark in here. Not totally, but you know, gloomy. The only light
is from that single, bare, dimmed bulb in the centre of the ceiling. There's no furniture, save for the single, straight backed, wooden, cushionless chair. You sit on it and look round the walls at all the paintings which appear to be by Van Gogh in his very dark period. Music's playing - it sounds like maybe Joy Division, but it's a real dirge. You're there for maybe 5 minutes.
Then you go back to work, and viola! - you feel so much better than you did, you're so glad to be out!

The old mushroom joke revisited. |
Sorry [DrCurry], forgive my ignorance, but I am unaware of the "old mushroom joke." How does it go? |
Lower your standards, expect fishbones. |
Back when I lived in my $@#!*#% 10-degree celsius college dorm, I used to go outside where it was even colder, and stay out there for 5 minutes. Then come back in so it would seem warm. |
You know what? It seemed a little warm for about two minutes. Fishbone. |
The Gloom Room. This would be my bosss office. It would be that is, if I had a job... |
Of course, if you were feeling
pretty good, but needed to tell
someone off, you'd have to go and
spend some time in the Happy
Room so that coming back out
into the office would make you
feel grumpy. |
Add to this a door which locks from the outside, and I'm pretty sure it was baked in Stalinist Russia. Come to think of it, my country *does* seem awefully nice by comparison. |
Then you go back to work, and *viola!* - you reveal your ignorance of the French language and stringed instruments! ; ) |
I like your idea [saker], it makes sense, kind of, but I would prefer to just have a wall mounted scream box I could stick my head into and blast a few expletives into the void... |
The problem is that, once you hit clinical depression, you wouldn't ever be able to get out of the room. It's sh*t being in there, but it's still sh*t outside. |
I woik in this place - fishbone. |
So youre sitting on the hard bench in The Gloom Room. Thinking that its depressing in here. Thinking that you had it so much better OUT THERE. But then you remember that it was depressing out there too, so the best you can hope for, the best that your day can get, is not so very good at all. At this point a dim bulb begins flickering above a door that you had not seen before. You open the door and go in. Its another room. Its The Even Gloomier Room. Theres no light at all, and it stinks. So then you realize, things CAN get worse
Every room is like this when you're depressed, PS. |
... and don't I know it, waugsy. |
Mind you, my company has recently moved office (while I've been off) and has thoughtfully put me on a floor with tasteful white walls around windows, purple pillars and long stretches of deep orange and lime green. Baked, I cry! |
Thank God that at least they didn't move out of town. Far far away, without telling you their new address. |
As long as they keep paying me, do you really think I would care? |
[bliss] Honestly, I can't say that I've ever had a job. I mean, a real job. Got no ambition, I guess. |
jobs? they are not all they cracked up to be. its wages thats nice. |
what do they pay lumberjacks these days? |
Hey [k_sra], I honestly do know the difference between *voila* and *viola*, and *voici* for that matter, and the difference between a *viola* and a *violin* for another. I lived in France, actually. It was nice. Those guys sure know how to eat, wow. |
// wall mounted scream box // I like the sound of that. Where can I get one? |
I'm off to my room now... |
