This is an idea that requires participation from the rest of the class. Notice all the fine (and not so fine) lyrics composed in the song catagories? Aren't they fun?
How's about this: an album of these song lyrics turned into cover versions of the songs they are based on as sung and played by Halfbakers
and their friends. I would try my hand but I play no instruments, can't sing too well and know no-one who plays an instrument who is willing to help me. Bastards.
Please link your mp3s and work will begin.

It looks like there are less than there used to be, up there - - where did they all go?
Anyway, I'll be happy to record one. [+] Also check with [yabba do yabba dabba]; he has hot licks. |
I'd just like to say that if I do recieve enough mp3 files to warrant it I will produce the CD and make it freely available at a reasonable price with no profit to myself, only production and distribution costs. |
In a "music from and inspired by" marketing ruse style and licensing issues aside, the CD should also feature renditions of "My Perfect Cousin" by The Undertones, "A Simple Text File" by Man or Astroman? and something by George Formby. |
If I didn't think that it'd result in me getting beaten to death by recording executives I would do that. |
Where did they all go: there were so many songs posted that we've had to partition them into different subcategories of A-Z. See link for a view of those subcategories, merged into one. |
"...freely available at a reasonable price..." |
Yeah, Bris; no kidding. I mean, if it were totally free: "I've got a solar reflector array I'm trying to build - - I'll take fifteen thousand copies, please." |
I've got a shop to open, how many freebees can I have? |
OK, let me rephrase that. I will not make any profit from the production of the CD, neither monetary nor through advertising. The price of the CD will be only the exact amount it costs to be produced. I am a poor man and I am not a registered charity (yet) so sadly I cannot freely distribute it. I will, however, design and produce it out of love. Free love. |
Hello? Any techies out there looking at this site? No, didn't think so. <Speaks slowly and condescendingly> The beauty of mp3's is that they can be distributed freely over the internet - as can jpeg's. In fact come to think of it you could even zip an entire album including cover artwork and post it on a website - just download, burn, print, and there's your cd! Baked, very successfully in my opinion: [link]. Admittedly some bakers may not have the technology to do this, but I'm sure those of us who do could spare a couple of blank cd's and a postage stamp. |
My studio has been lying idle for months due to lack of inspiration - and there was jutta having to deal with the overload of halfbakery songs. What was I thinking? Seriously, time is a major problem for me, but I might be able to come up with something next year. [contracts] - that's two of us. [htj] - please recruit more. |
Good suggestion [wagster]. To accomodate all needs I will produce the CD and also a website (via link or other means) from which the tracks and album cover can be downloaded for free. |
Glad to hear it. I am outputting a pathetically tiny amount of music these days due to work/family/halfbakery (sad isn't it?) so if I fail to carry out my aforementioned committment, please harangue me via email. |
And harangue [contracts] too. |
Consider yourself targetted. [contracts], alas I am no good at codes and cannot decipher your email address. My email is listed if you wish to get in contact with me so that I may harangue you also. |
What, and ruin the fun of the code?? I need no haranguing. I think I've got enough spare time on my hands to have something by the weekend. |
If I had a decent way to record something, I just might. |
I have a feeling that the recording quality may vary. |
I expect to hear at least one song sung by the current crowd gathering in London. |
My earlier estimates were too generous. This weekend was spent in preparation for next weekend's preoccupation. Ho ho ho. |
I spent a few hours reminding myself how bad I am at programming drums. I'll have something early next year. By the way, I'm working on "Halfbakery Song" - just in case anyone else had any designs on it.... |
//alas I am no good at codes and cannot decipher your email address// Yeah, right. Think you're pulling the wool over our eyes with that line? Ha! We all know you're an international spy! |
Um, anyway--I think it's a great idea! Alas, I'm no good with musical instruments but would sing ( read as "croak") if someone was threatening to kill me if I didn't. Too bad... But a complation by [wags] and [contracts] would still be cool! |
By the way, [contracts], who you callin' a ho? |
Ridiculous! I am no spy! I've not replied before because I was on an assassination mission in Peru and-- er, I mean, I was shopping. You know, for Christmas. Ahaha. |
"Halfbakerman" aka "Halfbakery Song" is finished and has been sent to [htj] and it's author down under. It's hardly professional quality, but I had fun making it. |
Someone else's turn next.... or do we have to 'volunteer' someone? |
Thanks Ian, can't get link to work though. |
Hmm. I'm getting "[playlist] NumberOfEntries=1 File1=track5.mp4". |
Doing a Save Target As gives me a text file which is similar. Am I doing something stupid? |
After months of unexplained and unnoticed absence I have returned! Sincere apologies to [wagster] who's been working hard whilst I've been idling on this matter. Sincere thanks too for a truly great song! I'd link it but the files too big for Yahoo! Geocities. [Tindale], great track but not exactly on the theme I was going for. Still, at this rate it could still make the album. Just need tracks two, three and four. |
An urgent appeal:
Please, any musicians (or even "musicians", I'm not overly picky) out there get recording! I'm looking at you [contracts], I remember your pledge. The Best Halfbakery Album In The World...Ever! needs you! Don't make me get physical. It ain't pretty. |
Unremarked upon is not the same as unnoticed. |
Who's going to explain (in simple terms for an old git) how to make an MP3 from an audio source? |
First you have to get the noise into your PC, then you have to record it and make it into the right type of file. |
1) Shove your analogue audio source into the audio input of your PC - this will probably be a stereo minijack marked up in red, so you'll probably need a 2xphono to 1xstereo minijack converter or similar. Bear in mind the minijack input is likely to be expecting a mic level signal (very low) so keep the volume right down. Open Sound Recorder (Programs | Accessories | Entertainment | Sound Recorder) and record a few seconds. If you can see the waveform appearing and it's not being clipped by the top and bottom of the window, you're doing ok. |
2) Now you'll need some audio software as Sound Recorder won't record more than 60 secs and won't save audio in the mp3 format. WavePad looks like it'll do the job nicely and it's free (link). It should allow you to record audio, edit it (if only to top and tail the section that you want) and save it in the mp3 format. |
I haven't used WavePad and I've assumed you're running XP, so take this with a little pinch of salt. Any probs, I'm on email. |
Thanks, [wag]. I may attempt that. |
Yeah, I've been busy . . . and stuff. :-D I haven't forgotten, though, I just haven't really been able to gather the emotional energy to perform in good spirits. I guess I'm still shaking off the holidays :-) |
//end up mp3- ing your record collection// I'm intending to start CD-ing all of my vinyl; I see no point in MP3-ing it. |
I've just mp3ed some old vinyl - I used
"Spin Doctor 2" which comes as part of
Roxio Toast Titanium. Not bad. |
Depends how much vinyl you have. If it's a sizable amount you will find mp3 files on a computer are smaller, easier to access, easier to backup, easier to transfer to other digital devices and are no more soulless than shelves full of cd-r's. Remember you can always make the mp3's into cd's as you require. |
I don't have a huge amount of vinyl, maybe 250 or so, plus my wife has another 50-ish (predominantly Dylan). But I have a reasonably good hi-fi in the lounge room, and the computers live in the study, so it seems to make sense to keep the music on music media (which can also be played in the car). |
Well, I've downloaded WavePad, and it seems to be quite the canine's gonads. It fiddled about a bit while it was installing, but it's simple to use. It has a text-to-audio converter, so you can have Steven Hawking on vocals, and it does Fast Fourier Transform analysis (at least, it claims to). Thanks for the link, [wagster]. As a test (of me, as much as of it), I played my mediocre attempt at a Halfbakery song into it, using my Pignose Traveler guitar (built in amp) and singing (with a cold) into my headset mike (came free with ViaVoice). When I get around to it, I'll record a proper version with a decent mike and a proper guitar rig. Until then, for those who care, (linky). |
good lord! wonderful stuff. is that really you? fanbloodytastic... I will not sleep now, I may have nightmares if I do! |
added it to my library (weird file) |
hahaha - still laughing... |
and yet - its sooo poignant <weeps> |
<applauds> Bravo, angel, bravo!!! The man's sick, yet he still records something for the 'baker's listening pleasure. What dedication. |
Hah! Nice, Mr. Angel, nice. You're waaay brave. |
Good going Angel! Glad WavePad worked out - might stick it on the laptop. |
I haven't been here much for a while, so can I use a months worth of unused votes on this one? Pretty please? No, well, never mind. It at least deserves my Yes! vote for the next month I think. |
Thanks and congratulations [angel]! The playlist is extended. All musicians, be ambitious! Be inspired! I'm desperately trying to find a friend of mine who's willing to help me record a track. |
He sounds just like ... an angel. |
Oooh! (Takes embarassed bow, applies band-aid to cut on cheek caused by thorn in roses thrown by [Machiavelli]. Sneezes.) [po]: 'fraid so. Sorry 'bout the nightmares. [FJ]: You must have rather peculiar angels in Sweden. |
Still laughing. Your voice is much deeper than I would have thought, from seeing your picture. (The cold, or my mistake?) Bravo! |
Mainly the cold, but that song's not really pitched right for me. |
I've just worked out how to put Halfbakery Song up on the net (link). I've renamed it Halfbakerman (sorry[UB]) as "Halfbakery Song" isn't really as specific now as it was when it was the only Halfbakery song there was. |
nice one wag. what a talented bunch you are! |
Not to mention an incredibly brave bunch. It takes real guts to post yourself singing or playing an instrument. |
Well done, Halfbakerman--especially the kazoo. Who's playing what instruments? |
I'm singing (badly) and playing Kazoo. My other half did some BV's on the la-de-da's (the in tune bits) and the voice at the end belongs to [crash]. The piano was originally a midi part downloaded off the net (oh the shame of it) and I have no info on who played it. It was tidied up and played back via a multisampled Steinway courtesy of Garritan Personal Orchestra (which is also responsible for the clarinet). I programmed the drums. Cubase SX 2.0 holds it all together. |
Neato! can I have a copy on 12 inch vinyl? |
I want a whole collection on 45's. +++++ Wags. |
[skin]/[blissy] - You can still press anything you want to vinyl for surprisingly little (link) |
That's too good [wags]! Now, nobody else dares try. |
It's the best I could come up with in the time - I've been doing this stuff for many years. [Angel]'s was fantastic - he did it within twenty four hours of my anno explaining how to record sound using a computer. As [Bris] said, that takes guts. |
I would encourage you all to grab any sort of microphone, any sort of software and whack out a song. It'll be fun! |
[wags], that's way impressive! Multi-tracked and all. I've got Cubasis installed on one of my other PCs, which is currently out of commission; I think I'll put it on this one as well, and get serious. |
Oh very nice, [wags]. I can't get at [angels] just at the moment. Wish I could pop in a rendition... not sure how though. : ( |
My word but it's been a long time since I've come up with an idea. So, I'm falling back to hassling people about this thing. |
Come on! Come aaaaahn!! Don't make [wagster] and [angel]'s contributions in vain! |
i'm annotatin purely so this gets bumped up to the front page ;) |
Dang! <kicks herself for not getting online more often> I'd love to play somethin, are there any songs already written that haven't been done yet? |
Yes. Several hundred. Look in halfbakery:songs and get recording :) |
Whoa, looks like I missed all the commotion. Bravo gentlemen, bravo. |
Err . . . forgot about this, but I have done a few practice runs - - I'll get it refined, recorded, and posted here in the near future. (That being said, nobody get their hopes up in terms of quality.) |
[contracts] - how've you been getting
on with it over the past... year? |
Loved Halfbakeryman, wagster. Very Terry Garoghan. |
I just downloaded Halfbakerman. That is pretty impressive [wagster], and I loved the final touch of having [crash] tell on you (much the same happens at my place).
