Actually, a better reason for this Idea is the fact that the skin makes Vitamin D from UV light. So, people who don't get enough sun-exposure can suffer from a deficiency of that vitamin. What tanning is, is the skin's defense against too much UV. I've read that black people living in places like Chicago sometimes suffer from Vitamin D deficiency because their natural protection against equatorial sunlight doesn't let enough through, when they live that far north. |
