TV Remote Standard

Every remote communicates in the same way for common functions

I've owned one of those one-for-all remotes, which comes with a huge manual full of codes for different TV types and it still didn't operate all the functions.

I propose that a standard be created that all remote controls adhere to, so that you can then buy decent aftermarket remotes that will control everything electronic in your house.

Alternately, you could have a device similar to a smartphone which has a different screen for each device (which you can download) so you can scroll through them and control the thing you want.

I'd pay good money for a customisable touchscreen remote.

Also, devices should talk to each other. If I change the TV channel away from DVD, it should pause. I can't think of any other examples where it would be useful.

Annotation:

If TVs become smartphone enabled, they will need a security feature where if you want to link to it, you have to press a physical button on the TV. This will stop people changing your TV to porn from the street.

Also, having an app for your smartphone that does everything I've mentioned is assumed to be obvious and probably baked.

This part of the idea already exists. Mine is a Denon, but I'm sure other obscure, high-end home entertainment companies make them as well. We call it the Vampire Remote, because it sucks the life-force out of all the other remotes to gain their powers.

More importantly, will it stop them changing it away from porn ?

Isn't this advocacy? I'm sure everyone agrees on the utility of a common standard for remotes (as for power adaptors), but it's presumably not in the interests of manufacturers.

Regarding smartphones, you can get an infrared dongle called "Re" and an app that lets you control anything with a customizable interface. If only the iPhone 5 had an infrared LED...
