I imagine this would work best for baseball, so I will use it as an example.
You log on to Zimmysports.com & select your preferred sport & team to watch an animated version of last nights game.
A graphic 2D overhead view appears on the screen with the names and game stats of the players at
their positions on the pictorially correct stadium (I.E. Minute Maid Park) next to an icon that represents them. (Think Tecmobowl style graphics).
"zip, zip, zip, do do do do ..., zip, zip"
At the speed it took you to read that you would see the image of a ball being thrown from the pitcher to the catcher and watch the ball/strike/out counter change so that you would know in around 5 seconds that the batter you are currently watching went through this sequence at bat: <<strike, ball, strike, foul ball, ball, strike>>
At this point red text appears in the center of the baseball field graphic indicating "Strike Out!" and the pitcher's stats change to show another strike out.
The next batter appears in the batter's box and the sequence is repeated and at the end of each inning the score and inning pops up briefly in red text.
I think you could watch last night's game in its entirety in about 10 minutes (vs 2-3 hours in real time) & I would love to do this each morning before starting work.
I think initially the simulation could be made by inputting the official scoring card from the game, but if the website does well, 14 people could be put on the payroll to attend the games and digitize the location of the ball when hit and to add other interesting things that occurred at the game for the programmers to animate, such as an arguing manager being tossed by the umpire (or a naked fan being chased by security).
This might well work for the NFL and cricket as well, though I don't know enough about cricket to be sure.
Tecmo bowl graphics
http://www.sportpla...com/tsb/techist.htm I know it's football, but I can't remember the names of any of the old baseball video games [Zimmy, Jul 15 2005]
Yahoo Sports ' NY Yankees"
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nyy If there's a game live, you can watch it in a flash app, very much like the idea describes. [waugsqueke, Jul 16 2005]
Yahoo Sports Previous game play-by-play
http://sports.yahoo...50715102&page=plays If you run this through the above-linked app, it should result in something very much like the idea describes. [waugsqueke, Jul 16 2005]
cbssportsline's version
http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/scoreboard I watched some of the action for the Astro's wildcard games last year on this one (They played during working hours, so I would minimize & maximize every now & then while working) [Zimmy, Jul 17 2005]

But I'm Zimmy!!!! How can this be expected of me? |
|

Willie Coyote? is this more of what you expected?
Zimmy's talkin' baseball
thinkin' 'bout the time constraint
I'm on the timeclock
fundin' my misrepresentivement
There's a man who's rainsoaked,
fadded out & paid off
whisperin' lies, tyrin' t' turn your soul soft
There's no bid, It's under the lid,
God knows why Zimmy's doin' it again
You'd better jump down the Alice way
lookin' for a new friend
The caterpiller on the mushroom
wants a happy use of pills

Yahoo Sports can almost do this. They display real-time games very much like you describe (no ball animation though). All they would need to do is run the play-by-play through the same java engine. |

Thanks for those links.
I'm not really a fan of the Sox or Yankees, but 17 to 1?
I'm more of a Yankee anti-fan. Thanks for that specific link, also. |

so not about Rafael Palmiero modeling underwear then? |
|

Recommend you check out a game in progress, though, to see if it's anything like what you describe. There's one playing right now (~2:30 Eastern US), NYY at Boston. The ballpark image is even shaped like Fenway. (Oh, here's Bernie Williams second pitch... a strike swinging.) |
|
|
[waugs] I did check them out. Did you know about cbssportsline's version? I think I may just read the play by play in the mornings from now on though.
It's the time it takes to follow it live that makes me feel guilty about not doing something more valuable with my time. (Like accidentally annoying people on the 1/2B).
Incidentally, It kind of freaked me out that Yahoo sports knew my name & said Hi "my name" in the top right hand corner. |
|
|
Nice... Sportsline's version is quite neat. You can watch the whole league at once. |
|
|
(The game today was 7-4 Yankees, btw. Williams singled to right on the next pitch. ran Matsui home. Flaherty drove Williams in later that inning.) |
|
|
[waugs] just curious if you clicked on the pitch by pitch under the box score?
They do this for the NCAA tourney also.
Sorry if I annoyed you about the Yankees comment. It's just that they're good every damn year. |
|
|
No I missed that. Yeah that's much better than Yahoo's thing. I see no reason why a game couldn't be 'played back' through that sort of interface. I would use this. |
|
|
Comment didn't annoy. Yankees fans are used to it. (Note however they were the 1 in that 17-1 rout last night. And earlier this year the Sox beat them 22-1. So not so great this year, they are. |
