I imagine this would work best for baseball, so I will use it as an example.
You log on to Zimmysports.com & select your preferred sport & team to watch an animated version of last nights game.
A graphic 2D overhead view appears on the screen with the names and game stats of the players at their positions on the pictorially correct stadium (I.E. Minute Maid Park) next to an icon that represents them. (Think Tecmobowl style graphics).
"zip,zip,zip, do do do do ..., zip, zip"
At the speed it took you to read that you would see the image of a ball being thrown from the pitcher to the catcher and watch the ball/strike/out counter change so that you would know in around 5 seconds that the batter you are currently watching went through this sequence at bat: <<strike, ball, strike, foul ball, ball, strike>>
At this point red text appears in the center of the baseball field graphic indicating "Strike Out!" and the pitcher's stats change to show another strike out.
The next batter appears in the batter's box and the sequence is repeated and at the end of each inning the score and inning pops up briefly in red text.
I think you could watch last night's game in its entirety in about 10 minutes (vs 2-3 hours in real time) & I would love to do this each morning before starting work.
I think initially the simulation could be made by inputting the official scoring card from the game, but if the website does well, 14 people could be put on the payroll to attend the games and digitize the location of the ball when hit and to add other interesting things that occurred at the game for the programmers to animate, such as an arguing manager being tossed by the umpire (or a naked fan being chased by security).
This might well work for the NFL and cricket as well, though I don't know enough about cricket to be sure.
