You've seen pizzas (pizze) of various shapes. Round pizzas. Square pizzas. Some more square pizzas. Get ready for pizza spheres. Are you ready?
They're small, like bite-sized. Maybe a little bigger. Like tangerine-sized. (If your mouth is tangerine-sized, you'll find them bite-sized.) They're
spheres of dough, with cheese and sauce and pepperoni within. Throw 'em on a cookie sheet or in the microwave for a molten hot, mouth-melting ball of pizzaness.
If they're ping-pong ball sized, you could take 'em with you on the go, juggle them, even roll them down the street. Who knew pizza could be so fun?
Possible additional modes of employ:
- In hot gumball machines [xandram]
- As ping pong ball [monojohnny]
- Pizzapaintball (sure to be a HB favorite)
- Marbles...

Sp: ravioli, baked ravioli and pizza bites. |
Raviolos? That's pasta. I'm talking bread product here. Pizza bites are cute, but I want mouthfuls of 360º (that's hot!) of pizza in 3 dimensions. Plus, you can't juggle pizza bites (the sauce would go everywhere!) or roll them down the street. |
It is, if you think pizza is disgusting.
But you can't possibly think that! -- Everybody Loves Pizza! [link] |
I thought this would be pizza cooked around a metal ball or something. |
Well, I was hoping to use dictionary.com to more properly define what pizza is, but even they have it all messed up. |
piz·za: A baked pie of Italian origin consisting of a shallow breadlike crust covered with seasoned tomato sauce, cheese, and often other toppings, such as sausage or olives. |
pie: A baked food composed of a pastry shell filled with fruit, meat, cheese, or other ingredients, and usually covered with a pastry crust. |
A pie is necessarily filled with something, whereas I have eaten many pizzas (both of the commercial origin and those of Bubba's supposed inclination) that are not filled with things. Bah! |
I'm going to show you all.
I am going to bake bite-size spherical pizza pies. I am going eat them and juggle them and roll them down the street. They'll be delicious, and I am going to burn my mouth on them, and LAUGH. |
Isn't this just a teeny weeny calzone? |
Pizza Pockets are baked and so are Pizza Bites. There are some in the frozen food section, but I can't recall the names. (they are small, spherical dough balls, stuffed with cheese, pepperoni, etc. and sauce)
[link] Hot Pockets. |
Sir, I know Hot Pockets. Hot Pockets are no Pizza Balls. |
Call me "woman".... but Hot Pockets make a Mini-Pizza pocket that is pretty close to a pizza ball, so are we just talking semantics here? |
Yeah but it sounds like Pizza Balls are just Hot Pockets, only small and round. And Hot Pockets are basically calzones (only not as tasty), therefore Pizza Balls= Hot Pockets=Calzones (only difference is tastiness). Now I do admit that the idea of a bite sized, authentic tasting Hot Pocket, or Pizza Bite is a good one, but it isn't exactly original. Also I get the feeling that producing these might not be cost effective. |
I think these are too close to existing pillow shaped bite sized pizza pockets.
And most people don't care if they're pillow shaped, or if they're spherical. |
They had things like that way back in the 1970's. They were awful. |
too bad they will all roll to one side on the pan when you cook them, then roll onto the floor after they fall off my plate |
Only if your plate is perfectly flat. And frictionless. |

This post made me so hungry, and there is nothing in the fridge. I hate you guys. |

Calvin and Hobbes? You are a surprise [nihilo]. |
The plate wouldn't have to be perfectly flat and frictionless, in order for them to fall off. |
No? But it helps.
It's rude not to cover your mouth while you're eating (or juggling pizza balls at the dinner table) and you sneeze, by the way. |
Gawd! Is this idea still here? |
Annoing on it certainly will not solve that problem. |
I imagine you would do it initially exactly like you make regular pizzas, but on a micro scale. A tiny circle of dough, throw on some sauce, cheese, then pepperonos. Then close it up and roll it in a ball. Bake it. I swear I'm going to attempt a batch one of these days. |
What about the attendand hazards of oral burns from throwing a whole one in your mouth and chewing on it? Have we learned nothing from the McApple Pie? |
I was sort of counting on that as one of its essential features. |
Why not dispense them from a Hot gumball machine? |
I had visions of a metal soccer-ball-looking compression unit to use as a mold while baking- then I realized that it's the same device used for a nuclear detonation....and would probably achieve the same result in the oven. |
[xandram], THAT IS PURE GENIUS!
It's 1057% better than my idea alone. Bless you, madam. |
[Rm Brz], my first idea was to make it spherical, but actual pizza size -- so you'd wind up with conical pizza slices. Regular pizza is round, and so 3-D pizza naturally must likewise be round. These pockets, rolls and what-not are conceptually flawed, straying from the geometrical perfection of the pizza. |
There did seem to inherently be all sorts of preparation, baking, serving, and eating issues with spherical pizze at that scale. The most obvious one being, of course, that heating up a pizza-size sphere of dough and cheese would produce a molten core of mozzarella hotter than the sun. |
I think that the necessary compression to achieve the sphere will still end in said result at any size. It must be heat conductive to get a crispy crust.. It must have a spherical multi-part boltable shape to attain the sphere. Vent holes will create steam, and thereby, gooey doughy crust, resulting in an unfortunate collapsed flabby no-longer-sphere. We need one of the engineers here. That said, I still like the idea. And the thought of a hive-like ball of pizza cones is even better, if you ask me. |
Big like 'dough-balls' that Pizza Express do. But they are just little garlic breads. |
Pizzas (Pizze?) that can be fired from small ping-pong ball guns - gotta be a bun. |
You wouldn't end up with conical slices, as that would be nigh impossible to create, rather, you would have pyramid-shaped slices, with the base of the pyramid being the outside of the pizza. A benefit to this would be that in theory (for a larger pizza sphere), one could assemble various pyramids, bake them half way or whatever so that they hold their shape, and then put them together in a sphere shape. The metal ball thingie would work great for bite-sized ones, provided you have thick and/or resilient dough, so that the sauce etc does not cause sogginess. |
[nihilo]'s infectious enthusiasm alone deserves a bun. [+] |

Pizza balls? I had them, the doctor gave me some cream and they soon went back to normal.... |

Jupiter's moon Io looks like a spherical pizza. |
"I'll take one extra-large spherical pizza with the volcanic sulphur topping, to go!" (Going at 17.33m/s, apparently) |
What if the sphere is the other way around somehow? Like if it has the sauce or toppings on the outside? It would all be nicely cooked, ... maybe a bread core, the toppings and sauce etc, then a crust on the outside? |
