Elevator music, on the whole, sucks.
Space Elevator music should not suck - I'm thinking a full orchestral arrangement of 'The Girl From Ipanema' with sweeping chords, majestic horns and heart-lifting strings.
As people shuffle their feet and avoid making eye-contact, they would at least be able
to look out of the window, see the curvature of the earth, and enjoy some easy listening sounds crafted especially for the experience.
Alternately, the full Getz + Gilberto catalogue should do.

No, it's Space Elevator Music! - we could throw in some Johan Stauss if you want. |

[+] Good job. I'm glad someone else realizes the true issue that elevator music poses to society. Linky. |

Thanks [Blumster] - There's a travellator between two terminals at Chicago airport that is ceilinged by various neon shapes while your motion through the tunnel is accompanied by a strange but relaxing kind of contemplative, almost random suggestion of notes. It's a real treat after rushing about in airport nastiness to have a few moments of thoughtfull quiet - I think something like that would work quite well. |

Cool! How about a heart-lifting version of 50 cent's P.I.M.P. with piano, flute and strings? |
It's gonna need to go on for a long, long time... |
Why don't elevators have jukeboxes in them? Then you could listen to whatever you like. |
Incidentally, does anyone have a link for the thousand-year-music algorithm they used in the Millenium Dome in London? Have tried looking and failed. |

I fear frequent flyers might get bored of Strauss after the thirtieth time... and Also Sprach Zarathrustra |
I'm thinking some Brian Eno or Vangelis. After all, space elevators and space music are a natural combo. |
[zen_tom] - When I went there they were playing An American in Paris (Gershwin). A little cheesy, but still better than any other airport travelator I've been on. |
[Mach] - I'm very tempted... |

I quite like the music they play in Japanese restaurants. You know, the "plink plunk plink plink" music. Maybe they could play that. |
I hear that the space elevator will take several hours to travel. you may as well make it more like a inter contential fligh with food service & a bad movie. |
Perhaps something by Holst, or the midi files from Frontier Elite II. |
I just had this idea, and was thoroughly disappointed to find
out that it had already been posted. My version, though, was
to play lounge versions of space-themed pop songs like
"Rocket Man", "Space Oddity", etc. |

The criteria for good elevator music are a little different
from those you'd apply to other music. At least one fairly
well known classical composer (Eric Satie) wrote elevator
music (he called it furniture music) and complained when
people actually listened to it <link>. |
"Good elevator music"? Surely you oxymoron. |

Murph and the Magictones cover of Stairway to Heaven? |

36 000 km as a long way, and it's going to be tough to do very high speeds through the first 100 km or so, so I think we're looking at some pretty long symphonies here. |

Do it live. I wanna hear the sound of a cello at 2.5g... |
