One of the Biblical books is called "The Song of Solomon". Now while what we read in the King James' Version is a translation, I wonder if the original version rhymed and actually was sung accompanied by music.
Also, considering the risque nature of many modern songs, this one might be due for a
re-release! (In rhymed/sung form, that is.)

Hebrew poetry doesn't rhyme or have a regular meter. Instead, parallelism and mataphor are used to distinguish it. |

To be honest, i can't see the kids of today shakin' their asses to lyrics such as "Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them." |
|
|
Ooh, yeah, get down to those shorn-sheep. |

I think it would work, but not a line for line copy. A poet could pick out the best lines and put them together into something new and modern, but still with that biblical timelessness. It could be done as a ballad by Norah Jones. The Byrds made it work with "Turn Turn Turn", which came from Ecclesiastes. Other prayers have been hits - the Lords Prayer, Amazing Grace, Desiderata. And Kate Bush did James Joyce - there are lots of examples of pop music based on literature. |

Reggae occasionally sets music to biblical text. |

Just to see if this was baked (as good ideas often are) I searched on "S of S" and "lyrics." And found...Ms. Kate Bush. (see link) |

It seems that _some_ early Hebrew texts of the Bible were marked up to characterize passages as verses or to impart meter when they were chanted aloud. |

Ha Ha! I was watching The Crime of Father Amaro last night. A young Mexican priest falls for the flesh in a tragic way. Half way through the movie, intent on consumating their sin, we observe him embracing his beautiful Amelia. The music builds and wanes in anticipation as he caresses her eyes and cheeks with his lips and then... he whispers in her ear "Your hair is as a flock of goats, that descend from Mount Gilead"
WTF? A flock of goats? Some compliments just did not endure the centuries - at least not to my ear. |
|
|
Any man who tells me that my hair is like a flock of goats, my teeth like a flock of sheep, and my breasts like twin fawns of a gazelle (or clusters of fruit) will have my heart forever and ever and ever. |
