Now that there is no more shield to be carried before oneself to be ornamented with one's personal insignia and what shield there is is left behind in a car park somewhere remote while one trudges along floors leveled smooth and of vast expanse especially if one is visiting somebody important in the important one's own castle there is a need to announce to others that one has arrived and travelled over this hallowed place and that one is a person to be respected.

With your sole of arms, you would just shuffle your feet on a mat of dust before disembarking and then leave a trail emblazoned with your personal mark, so that anyone following could just look down and say:

"Gules, nine bezants in saltire cantoned between two boars' heads erased in fess, the dexter contournée Or, armed Argent and langued Azure. Above the Shield is placed an Helm, with a Mantling Gules doubled Or and on a Wreath of the Liveries is set for Crest a thistle slipped and leaved Gules each leaf charged with a bezant, and in an Escrol over the same ..."

       Roman courtesans and prostitutes used to have shoe soles which printed the words "Follow me" whever they walked. Similar? This was done with studs or hobnails, I believe.
