Use a very long cable which have attached to it's ends a charged sphere, one charged - the other +. The spheres create an electrical field which separate out the charged particles into + and - streams of particles which fly at the spheres. When the particles get close they are deflected by a magnetic field so that they miss, the negative charges are collected by a plate behind the + sphere and caried through the cable to a device which converts the power into a form suitable for transmission or used in situ, the electric charge then moves on to the other end of the cable and through a grid of needles bleeds off into the positive stream of particles neutralizing them.

This device is able to generate power by slowing the particles leaving the sun, in essence a very large ion engine in reverse.

The real beauty of this is the ability to very easily scale. By increasing the lenght of the cable and charge density of the ends hundreds of square miles can be covered by the electric fields.

and you're going to apply a negative magnetic field to one loop and a positive to another how ?

and so how are you going to keep it in position, if it is slowing the particles, then the particles will be imparting momentum onto the collector

A secondary issue is that your particle streams will not fly at the loops, they will fly past the loops and perhaps be deflected slightly by the magnetic field, something you are obviously not aware of is that Magnetic field density drops off VERY rapidly with distance, so in order to generate any kind of useful Area of magnetic field you would need to Generate and absolutely MASSIVE amount of power to create the field.

MRI machines utilize HUGE amounts of Magnetic density yet their magnetic fields drop off very quickly to the point that the field is almost non existent within 10 feet.

Sorry my friend but this idea has a one way ticket to the Hall of Bad Science.

umm.... doesn't the Earth have a bipolar magnetic field ? so in our planet's shadow there's electrons coming in on one side and protons on the other. Yes gravity would warp them in as well but the charge attraction repulsion would be added/subtracted to that. [ ]: + for the basic idea - for the implementation.

I hope that this clears up any confusion. The magnetic field is a small field used to protect the charged ends of the generator from contact with the solar wind so that it can maintain the charge that does the collecting and separating of charges within the solar wind. This device is an electrostatic device in other words and the magnetic field protects the charged parts from discharge and need not be big or particularly powerfull.

About keeping it stationary just place it between the sun and the earth but close enough to the sun to counter the thrust.

[jhomrighaus] I am aware that magnetic field density drops off VERY rapidly with distance, however the whole point is moot as the machine does it's work with an electrostatic field the magnets being used to shield the inducing parts of the machine.

I changed the wording of the origional post after re reading it to make it more understandable as to how it operates.
