It might be better to just get another gerbil.

This inflatable unit, made from tough black plastic is egg shaped, but with a flat bottom, it has four inflatable tubes running vertically up the sides and another running around the circumference near the base, all on the inside of the unit. When the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere you can drain the radiator into the unit, the suns heat will evaporate the water, it will run down the interior of the unit, being collected by a gutter formed by the internal inflatable tube running around the circumference. The flexible case the unit is stored in doubles as a water collector, a small tube runs from the unit into the storage case, the case has a tap at the bottom to allow the "distilled" water to be dispenesed easily, it also provides a means to store the water for future use. When rescued the unit can merely be deflated, folded and stored back in the case for future use.

There are a few different types of these manufactured, mostly for use on the water, I guess you could bury the bottom in the desert. [macrumpton, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

Very low-tech solar still http://www.desertus.../stories/water.html
You use some other "self-carried" fluid rather than radiator fluid. "(CAUTION: One fluid never to be used is radiator fluid, as its toxins will vaporize and poison the water.)" [Klaatu, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

Will this work with your own urine?

Yes, anything that contains water, so even leaves etc, would work.

I am not sure what the boiling point of glycol is, but you might not want to use radiator fluid, there could still be enough glycol in the distilled water to do some harm.

Have to fishbone this as a hazard to life. <link>

Thoroughly baked. To a crisp, even.
