Most people love to build snowmen, but don't know how. Sure, they've probably published "Snowmen for Dummies" but nothing beats hands-on experience. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to hire a couple of professionals dressed in [snow] suits that can come to your home, and construct / teach you to make a snowman or teach your kids to build one? Specialties can include: - oversize snowmen - anatomically correct snowmen - snow-women - snow sculptures - great snowmen with just a little bit of snow - building snowmen in warm climates

well, I wouldn't put your life savings into setting up this company, but if you're out of work, you could put your snowman building skills on your CV/resume, I suppose. I suggest "One of my skills, presently a hobby, is the creation of life-scale sculpture in transient natural media" as a way to phrase it.

You could also sell small grave stones to mark their passing in the spring.
FarmerJohn, Apr 24 2003

I rather think you'll get more buck for your bang writing "Snowmen for Dummies" than offering a consulting service. After all, I've got a book on building sandcastles at home (two, in fact - somehow I managed to buy it twice), and I would certainly spring for a book filled with photographs of fabulous snowmen.
DrCurry, Apr 24 2003

Why build one at all? Christmas trees come in aluminum. Snowmen come in inflated PVC.

The consultants could provide a snowman catalogue. They show up, pump up your choice of standard or custom snow man. Slap a bit a snow on the mesh exterior, and voila, a fake snowman that you can even move around the yard if you like.

"See kid, to build a proper snowman you need a Snow 1000 inflator..."

Could these guys switch over to being the Sand Castle Consulting Company in the summer?

rods tiger - because I'm devious. And because when you are beholden to someone else in the matter of finding a job, snowman-building is not a CV winner. (only from my experience, which is a 25% strike rate in the past six months).

If snowman building was inserted into the national curriculum (it could replace something useless like algebra), then children would grow up knowing how to build snowmen! The problem is it hardly ever snows (even up here in Aberdeen), so surely some way of building "Rain Men" would be more useful! ps rain men's innate mathematical abilities would counteract the removal of things like algebra from the NC as they could in turn teach the children who built them (circle of life type thing!!)

Inserting Snowment Building into the national Curriculum is an EXCELLENT Idea. I wasn't thinking "big picture" enough.

       Kudos, Mike Oliver !

<Martha Stewart>I like to call for a service to bring a snow-making truck right to my house. After adding just the right amount of my special snowman recipe mix, I direct them to fill my yard with perfect fluffy snow. I then provide them with detailed plans and supervise the construction of welcoming snowmen for all my guests. This is particularly fun when it's cold and clear, and none of your neighbors have any snow at all. After the party, I like to make slushballs to throw at the press.</MS> +

Make 'em out of cement and they'll last all summer.

Hello, Snowman Tech Support? We've been trying to get this snow into a big ball for three hours and it's just not working for us ... Yeah, we tried that ... And that ... Mittens? Gloves? Can you tell me where I could find those? (Honey, check under the sink and see if we have any 'gloves'.) ... What? Oh, we're gonna need COAL now? (Laughing) Okay, how much? Just a few pieces, huh? And what else? ... A carrot. You want me to find a CARROT. Now. In the dead of winter. Look, pal, if this was a wrong number, you shoulda just leveled with me when I called.

There already is a handbook for building snowmen (homo niveus). Just leaf through any "Best of Calvin & Hobbes" and check out Calvin's snowmen, especially "Snowman House of Horror" and "Snowman Bowling".

I guess this might be at least partially baked. A local entrepreneur has been offering a service around here for a few years where they'll put up your Xmas lights on your house, either to your specifications or you can let their designer have his/her way. The crew will also put up any other seasonal decor you have, like a Santa figure or nativity scene or (here it comes) snowman!

I love the concrete Idea.. but then it would be concreteman.
mahatma, Apr 24 2003

concreteballs would not be much fun either.
po, Apr 24 2003

It hardly ever concretes much anymore. Now when I was a kid in the fifties, we had blizzards so that the concrete drifts covered the Nashes and DeSotos.
FarmerJohn, Apr 24 2003

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Cement! Let It Cement! Let It Cement!

It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Cement! Let It Cement! Let It Cement!

       When we finally kiss goodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm

       The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbyeing
But as long as you love me so
Let It Cement! Let It Cement! Let It Cement!
po, Apr 24 2003

Hm. Yeah. What was the difference between concrete and cement again?
DrCurry, Apr 24 2003

between a rock and a hard place?
po, Apr 24 2003

       concrete = cement + ( sand or gravel )

Seeing how this thread has deteriorated, I think I'll try to steer things back to the original concept, that of a consulting company to build a snowman for you. For the idea itself I have to give you a croissant, mahatma, but not for the thought that people "don't know how" to build one. That's like losing the recipe for ice cubes! Sure, maybe someone's first attempts might look like Madame Tussaud's during a heat wave, but that's part of the fun! In some areas (like where I live) where snowfalls seem to last only a day or two it would be nice to call for a snowman to be built while I'm at work, and in warmer climates it would be fun to have a big dump truck pull up and drop off a load of snow for an afternoon of fun and frolic and my-snowman-is-better-than-yours competition. In those cases I think snowman consultants would be a good thing.
Canuck, Apr 25 2003

Just looking for a way to make better snowmen I suppose....
