Simple Social network

I just saw an article about a social network that is free of ads, but you have to pay for it. WTF? I may not be expert enough of a technologist to understand this kind of thing, but how much money can it cost to keep a list of someone's friends? In my experience all that facebook and twitter do on top of having a list of my friends and making a web page that allows me to send one or many of them messages, is, well there isn't very much else that they have done that has been worth anything to me. If there was a social network with just:

1. a list of my friends, 2. a simple way for me to read what they are up to, and 3. a simple way for me to send stuff to them

And no advertisements, games, bullshit, or payment plans,

And with all the same font,

I would use it, and I am sure enough other people would also at least consider using it enough to sign up for it, which would in turn encourage enough corporations to use it so that you could charge them enough for just having accounts on the network, so that you could run the rest of it for free. It cant take that much money to have a completely simple social network.

Twitter covers 1 and 2, and 3 depending on what you want to send (photos, videos).

I've got one of those. It's called an 'e-mail account'. Don't feel bad if you've never heard of it. It's a very new thing, and not very many people are using it yet. It's sure to catch on, though.

Isn't a social network that thing that pre-dated Facebook where you went out and met real people in real locations?
